In 1858 an Act of the New Brunswick Legislature authorized the trustees to establish a degree-conferring institution at Sackville, under the name of the Mount Allison Wesleyan College.

A few years later, the Junior Department was joined at Sandhurst from High Wycombe by the Senior Department, which in 1858 became a separate institution, the Staff College.

Despite the success of that institution, and of similar programs set up thereafter at Harvard University, Yale University ( 1843 ) and Columbia University ( 1858 ), law school attendance would remain a rare exception in the profession.
