Starley's 1885 Rover, manufactured in Coventry, England, is usually described as the first recognizably modern bicycle.

In 1885 James Starley's nephew, John Kemp Starley, invented the Rover Safety Bicycle-a rear-wheel-drive, chain-driven bicycle with two similar-sized wheels, which is essentially the design still used on bicycles today.

James Starley, a foreman at Coventry, began to make improvements and in 1885, the Starley Rover, a safety bicycle manufactured by Starley's nephew, John Kemp Starley, was the first recognisably modern bicycle.

The whole appearance and feel of the book, and the accuracy of the text and beauty of the script was highly praised by scholars such as Bishop Christopher Wordsworth ( 1807 – 1885 ), nephew of the poet and an important New Testament textual scholar, who described the book as " surpassing in delicate simplicity of neatness every manuscript that I have seen ".

His nephew, the fifth Earl, was Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms from 1873 to 1874 in the Liberal government of William Ewart Gladstone and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Dorset from 1885 to 1905.

The first Baronet was succeeded according to the special remainder by his nephew, the aforementioned second Baronet, who was elevated to the peerage in 1885.

The Court Circular shows that she was usually known by that title until early 1886, when the Circular began to consistently refer to her by her husband's title, i. e. " HSH Princess Edward of Saxe-Weimar " ( Laura Seymour, sister of the 5th Marquess of Hertford and morganatic wife of Queen Victoria's nephew, HSH Prince Victor of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, was also belatedly accorded her husband's princely style by an announcement in the Court Circular dated 15 December 1885.

A nephew, Benjamin Gratz Brown ( 1826 – 1885 ) was also politically inclined.

Matheson's nephew added an upper floor in 1878 and an extension at the rear in 1885.

Nevada Stoody Hayes ( born at Sandyville, Ohio, USA on 21 October 1885, and died at Tampa, Florida, on 11 January 1941 ), sometimes called Nevada de Bragança, was an American socialite who became the wife of Infante Afonso, Duke of Porto, whose nephew, Manuel II, was the last king of Portugal.

The railway station that opened here in 1885 was originally called Subiaco, but it caused confusion because it was also the name of an estate and mansion on the opposite side of Parramatta River at Rydalmere, built by Hannibal Macarthur, the nephew of John Macarthur.

His mother and father had married four years previously, at which time Chaplin Sr. became the legal carer of Hannah's illegitimate son, Sydney John ( 1885 – 1965 ).
