Starley's 1885 Rover, manufactured in Coventry, England, is usually described as the first recognizably modern bicycle.
In 1885 James Starley's nephew, John Kemp Starley, invented the Rover Safety Bicycle-a rear-wheel-drive, chain-driven bicycle with two similar-sized wheels, which is essentially the design still used on bicycles today.
James Starley, a foreman at Coventry, began to make improvements and in 1885, the Starley Rover, a safety bicycle manufactured by Starley's nephew, John Kemp Starley, was the first recognisably modern bicycle.
