Cairns was a lieutenant in the The Somerset Light Infantry ( Prince Albert's ), British Army, attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment in Burma during the Second World War.

When Carlin was approximately 26 years old, he served as a private in the 1st Battalion, 13th Regiment of the British Army, later known as The Somerset Light Infantry ( Prince Albert's ), during the Indian Mutiny when on 6 April 1858 at Azumgurh, India, he did the deed for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross:

* HGDH Princess Alexandrine of Baden ( 1820 – 1904 ); married Duke Ernest II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha ( 1818 – 93 ), childless marriage due to which Ernest's younger brother Albert's British issue succeeded in that duchy.

* Albert's father's maternal grandmother, a Scandinavian noblewoman named Marianna, the first wife of Duke Barnim I of Pomerania ( d 1278 ), lord of Wolgast, was claimed to have been a daughter of King Eric X of Sweden and his wife Richeza of Denmark.

Maymyo was an important educational centre during colonial times, with the GEHSs ( Government English High Schools ), such as St. Mary's, St. Michael's, St. Albert's, St. Joseph's Convent, and Colgate, all based in the town.
