Galileo and Earth
The Copernican theory of the solar system – that the Earth revolved annually about the Sun – had received confirmation by the observations of Galileo and Tycho Brahe ( who, however, never accepted heliocentrism ), and the mathematical investigations of Kepler and Newton.
In 1616, on the orders of Paul V, Bellarmine summoned Galileo, notified him of a forthcoming decree of the Congregation of the Index condemning the Copernican doctrine of the mobility of the Earth and the immobility of the Sun, and ordered him to abandon it .< ref > Blackwell ( 1991, p. 126 ).
While the impacts took place on the side of Jupiter hidden from Earth, Galileo, then at a distance of 1. 6 AU from the planet, was able to see the impacts as they occurred.
Galileo arrived at Jupiter on December 7, 1995, via gravitational assist flybys of Venus and Earth, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit Jupiter.
Galileo then performed a second flyby of Earth at 303. 1 km at 15: 09: 25 UT on 8 December 1992, adding 3. 7 km per second to its cumulative speed.
Galileo, however, felt that the descriptive content of the technical disciplines warranted philosophical interest, particularly because mathematical analysis of astronomical observations — notably the radical analysis offered by astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus concerning the relative motions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, and planets — indicated that philosophers ' statements about the nature of the universe could be shown to be in error.
* 1633 – The Holy Office in Rome forces Galileo Galilei to recant his view that the Sun, not the Earth, is the center of the Universe.
Astronomers of the era expected that changes over time in the apparent separation and relative location of these stars would provide evidence for both the proper motion of stars and, by means of parallax shifts in their separation, for the distance of stars from the Earth ( a method first suggested by Galileo Galilei ).
Most of the research effort to date has centered on Earth atmosphere entry configurations ( Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle ), planetary entry designs ( Viking, Pioneer Venus, Galileo and MSL ), and aerobraking ( AFE ) configurations.

Most dramatically, the Galileo space probe was deliberately destroyed at the end of its mission by crashing it into Jupiter, to avoid the possibility of contaminating the Jovian moon Europa with bacteria from Earth.
Ludovico Ariosto, in his epic Orlando Furioso ( 1513 ), jestingly sent his hero to a Moon where everything lost on Earth eventually turns up ; but it was not until Galileo discovered ( 1609 – 1610 ) that the Moon had surface features, and that the other planets could, at least, be resolved into disks, that the concept that the planets were real physical bodies came to be taken seriously.
In the early 16th century, the debate on the Earth's motion was continued by Al-Birjandi ( d. 1528 ), who in his analysis of what might occur if the Earth were rotating, develops a hypothesis similar to Galileo Galilei's notion of " circular inertia ", which he described in the following observational test:
It was not until Galileo Galilei observed the moons of Jupiter on January 7, 1610, and the phases of Venus in September, 1610 that the heliocentric model began to receive broad support among astronomers, who also came to accept the notion that the planets are individual worlds orbiting the Sun ( that is, that Earth is a planet and is one among several.
