Fine Gael is generally considered to be more on the political right in comparison to its more centrist rival, Fianna Fáil, but Fine Gael has never governed Ireland without the Labour Party, a social-democratic party on the centre-left of Irish politics.

It asked nations to recognise Ireland as a separate nation, free from British rule.

The Nation of Ireland having proclaimed her national independence, calls, through her elected representatives in Parliament assembled in the Irish Capital on January 21, 1919, upon every free nation to support the Irish Republic by recognising Ireland's national status and her right to its vindication at the Peace Congress.

Ireland to-day reasserts her historic nationhood the more confidently before the new world emerging from the war, because she believes in freedom and justice as the fundamental principles of international law ; because she believes in a frank co-operation between the peoples for equal rights against the vested privileges of ancient tyrannies ; because the permanent peace of Europe can never be secured by perpetuating military dominion for the profit of empire but only by establishing the control of government in every land upon the basis of the free will of a free people, and the existing state of war, between Ireland and England, can never be ended until Ireland is definitely evacuated by the armed forces of England.

This relationship was further strengthened by a visit from the President of Ireland Mary McAleese between 14 and 16 June 2006 on her speech about the long standing relationship with Lesotho and shared history between both nations.

In July 1987, Labour MP Ken Livingstone used his maiden speech to raise the 1975 allegations of a former Army Press officer in Northern Ireland, Colin Wallace, who also alleged a plot to destabilise Wilson.

His welcome speech to Prince Charles was viewed by many journalists negatively in Ireland.

In his very first speech in the post he mistakenly referred to himself as the " Secretary of State for Ireland.

In a speech in favour of the government bill for a rate in aid ( a tax on the prosperous parts of Ireland that would have paid for famine relief in the rest of that island ) in 1849, he won loud cheers from both sides, and was complimented by Disraeli for having sustained the reputation of that assembly.

On 19 January 1968 O ' Neill made a speech marking five years in office to members of the Irish Association, calling for " a new endeavour by organisations in Northern Ireland to cross denominational barriers and advance the cause of better community relations ".

In his maiden speech, he called for an inquiry into the unionist government of Northern Ireland.
