It was arranged for Violet to live in Penang for there was a law in Kedah which forbade members of the royal family to marry non-Malays without the prior approval of the Ruler or Regent.

People born in Saiburi are considered subjects of the King of Thailand ; thus, people who were born there and are now living in the state of Kedah are permitted to purchase land and live in Thailand even though technically, they are now living in a Malaysian state.

However, both Brunei and Kedah are quite close.

Among the oldest archaeological artefacts inscribed with Arabic script are ; a tombstone of Syeikh Rukunuddin dated 48 AH ( 672 CE ) in Barus, Sumatra ; a tombstone dated 290 AH ( 910 CE ) on the mausoleum of Syeikh Abdul Qadir Ibn Husin Syah Alam located in Alor Setar, Kedah ; a tombstone found in Pekan, Pahang dated 419 AH ( 1026 CE ); a tombstone discovered in Phan Rang, Vietnam dated 431 AH ( 1039 CE ); a tombstone dated 440 AH ( 1048 CE ) found in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei ; and a tombstone of Fatimah Binti Maimun Bin Hibat Allah found in Gresik, East Java dated 475 AH ( 1082 CE ).

Other dignitaries who paid their last respects are the then Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang, Tengku Mahkota Tengku Abdullah of Pahang, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor, Tuanku Muhriz, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah and Regent of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra.

In Southeast Asia, similar dialects are spoken in the states bordering Penang ( Kedah, Perlis and northern Perak ), as well as in Medan.

Meanwhile in Kedah, the famous nasi kandar restaurants are Nasi Kandar Pokok Ceri and Royale Hijau Kuning.

In the year 1275, the ambitious king Kertanegara, the fifth ruler of Singhasari, launched a peaceful naval campaign northward towards the weak remains of the Srivijaya in response to continuous Ceylon pirate raids and Chola kingdom's invasion from India which conquered Srivijaya ’ s Kedah in 1025.

The Buddhist kingdom of Ligor took control of Kedah shortly after.

Subsequently, small Hindu Malay states started to appear in the coastal areas of Malay peninsular notably the Gangga Negara ( 2nd century ), Langkasuka ( 2nd century ), and Kedah ( 4th century ).

The coming of the Chola reduced the majesty of Srivijaya, which had exerted influence over Kedah, Pattani and as far as Ligor.

* 1909 – By signing the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, Thailand relinquishes its sovereignty over the Malay states of Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu, which become British protectorates.

The Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 defined the modern border between Siam and British Malaya by securing Thai authority over the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Satun, which were previously part of the semi ‐ independent Malay sultanates of Pattani and Kedah.

Five state governments, Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak ( which was later returned via court ruling following a constitutional crisis ) and Selangor, fell to Pakatan Rakyat as well.

The twelve animals represent the twelve Naksat cities or city-states which were tributary to the Nakhon Si Thammarat kingdom: the mouse of Saiburi ; the ox of Pattani ; the tiger of Kelantan ; the rabbit of Pahang ( actually a city in Pahang which is said to be submerged by a lake now ); the nāga of Kedah ; the snake of Phatthalung ; the horse of Trang ; the goat of Chumphon ; the monkey of Bantaysamer ( might be Chaiya, or a town in Krabi Province ); the rooster of Sa-ulau ( unidentified city, might be Songkhla, Kanchanadit or Pla Tha ); the dog of Takua Pa and a pig of Kraburi.

Light was born in Kuala Kedah, Kedah ( which is now in Malaysia ).

Luckily for Tunku, all vehicles in the convoy had been directed to space out at two-minute intervals to avoid attracting the attention of Japanese war planes, armed with machine guns, which were patrolling the sky over North Kedah.

IN every other district in Kedah, communist occupied district offices and police stations and organised public rallies at which they announced that Kedah had become a communist republican state.

Tunku also had a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh and he had acquired a wealth of experience as a district officer in Kedah, which enable him to understand and sympathise with the problems of the rural population, who made up a large proportion of the UMNO membership.

Keadilan also successfully contested the state legislative elections which saw the loose coalition of Keadilan, DAP and PAS forming coalition governments in the states of Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor.

The father of Malayan independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, received no awards and carried the title " Tunku ", which he inherited as the prince of the state of Kedah.

However, Barisan Nasional lost an additional four states ( Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor ) to the loose coalition of opposition parties composed of PAS, Democratic Action Party ( DAP ) and People's Justice Party ( PKR ) in the 2008 elections, which has been termed by the Opposition as the ' political tsunami ' of Malaysia.

PLUS also obtained the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway,, which starts at Mambau in Seremban with an interchange at Lukut and ending near the town centre in Port Dickson and Butterworth – Kulim Expressway, which starts from Butterworth, Penang to Kulim in Kedah.

Kedah has a relatively heterogeneous populace constituted by the three major ethnic groups ; the Malays, Chinese and Indians, similar to most of the other Malaysian states.

In Kedah an inscription in Sanskrit dated 1086 CE has been found.

It has two major plants in Kemaman, Terengganu, and Gurun, Kedah.

Among the earliest kingdoms known to have been based in what is now Malaysia is the ancient empire of Langkasuka, located in the northern Malay Peninsula and based somewhere in Kedah.

Tunku chose Kuala Muda in Kedah, where he had been District Office before Second World War.

Another Malay annals Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa known as Kedah Annals, Gangga Negara may have been founded by Merong Mahawangsa's son Raja Ganjil Sarjuna of Kedah, allegedly a descendant of Alexander the Great or by the Khmer royalties no later than the 2nd century.

A host of vendors have been appointed in a vendor park opposite Naza Automotive Manufacturing ( NAM ) in Gurun, Kedah.

On 30 December 1941, Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the Thai Field Marshal, sent his army to occupy the four Malay states of Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah, and Kelantan, which had been transferred to the British sphere of control under the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909.
