Hangul ( ; transcribed as Han-geul in South Korea ), also known as Chosŏn ' gŭl () in North Korea, is the native alphabet of the Korean language.

The Government-General of Korea popularized the writing style of a mixture of Hanja and Hangul which was used in later Joseon dynasty.

The Hangul Society, originally founded by Ju Si-gyeong, announced a proposal for a new, strongly morphophonemic orthography in 1933, which became the prototype of the contemporary orthographies in both North and South Korea.

During the Joseon dynasty, Korea used cheonse ( Hanja: < span lang =" KO "> 千歲 </ span >; Hangul: < span lang =" KO "> 천세 </ span >, literally " one thousand years ") in deference to the Chinese emperor.

In Korea, glutinous rice is called chapssal ( Hangul: 찹쌀 ), and its characteristic stickiness is called chalgi ( Hangul: 찰기 ).

Hee-seop Choi (; ; Hangul: 최희섭 ; Hanja: 崔熙燮 ; born March 19, 1979 in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea ) is a professional baseball player who has played in the MLB for the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
