Southern's final programme's And It's Goodbye From Us it was officialy closing ceremonies on 1 January 1982 at 00: 43 GMT.

However, the general consensus is that it is a star, named after the Southern Star and because Southern's final transmission showed the logo zooming off into the night sky.

These studios were purchased by TVS from their predecessor Southern, but TVS were delayed in the purchase of the site by Southern and therefore had to initially operate prior to launch from portakabins in the Southern car park, leading to Southern contemptuously naming them Portakabin TV, as referenced in a satirical song performed by Richard Stilgoe on Southern's final programme.

Southern's final major work, Scholastic Humanism and the Unification of Europe, was unfortunately destined to remain unfinished at his death.

Southern's South East news team in Dover produced separate bulletins for the area as an opt-out into the Day by Day programme each weeknight.

Notable programmes produced by Southern Television over the years included the flagship regional news magazine Day by Day presented by an able team of presenters including Barry Westwood, Peter Clark, and long-serving weatherman Trevor Baker ; Out of Town, a countryside programme introduced by Jack Hargreaves, who would later join Southern's board of directors ; How, a children's science programme also featuring Hargreaves along with Fred Dinenage, Bunty James ( later replaced by Marian Davies ) and Jon Miller ; Freewheelers, a children's spy series ; Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years and Worzel Gummidge, starring Jon Pertwee as the eponymous walking scarecrow.

In the latter half of 2005 and early 2006, Cooden Beach station underwent a minor refurbishment programme to bring the station in line with Southern's image ( the company's dark green colour scheme was implemented ).

On 6 April 1584, Oxford's daughter, Bridget, was born, and two works were dedicated to him, Robert Greene's Gwydonius ; The Card of Fancy, and John Southern's Pandora.

" Other historians, such as H. G. Richardson or G. O. Sayles, take a view that the change was less radical than Southern's view.

It had been written with Robin Williams in mind but he turned it down ; comedian-actress Whoopi Goldberg then signed on, with Southern's friend Rip Torn directing, but the project was troubled.

Competition was stiff, and in the end, Southern lost its franchise to Television South, a new consortium with fresh ideas and bold plans that were quite different to Southern's proposals.

Southern's failure was met with anger and disbelief by its board of directors.

Another factor may have been the company's very conservative ( and possibly dull ) nature and that, with a new decade just dawned, the south of England would be a radically different area ; it was felt that Southern's application was, understandably, more of the same tried and tested formula, which in time would not have reflected the possibilities for the area.

The winning bidder, TVS, spent months trying to persuade Southern to sell its studios ; until it finally succeeded, TVS was forced to use portable office buildings ( known as Portakabins ) in Southern's car park, something repeated later by Meridian while it waited to take over from TVS.

This was the official line given by the IBA, but it was also considered that Southern's non-local ownership ( the majority shareholders were companies based in London and Dundee ) and their very conservative nature led to it being dropped in favour the more interesting proposals made by TVS in their franchise application.

The exception was the Southern Railway – mainly because the majority of the Southern's operations were based around short-distance commuter, suburban and rural services with frequent station stops where water could be taken on from water columns.

The part of lawyer George Hanson in the Peter Fonda – Dennis Hopper road movie Easy Rider was written for Torn by Terry Southern ( who was a close friend ), but according to Southern's biographer Lee Hill, Torn withdrew from the project after he and co-director Dennis Hopper got into a bitter argument in a New York restaurant.

The archive of networked programmes made by Southern Television, for example, is now owned by the Australian media company Southern Star Group ( no connection ) – but Southern's regional output is in the hands of ITV plc, whilst the few surviving tapes of Associated-Rediffusion belong to many different organisations ( the majority of Associated-Rediffusion's tapes were recorded in monochrome and therefore deemed of no use upon the arrival of colour broadcasting ; as such they were disposed of by their successor Thames Television ), although in recent years there have been occasional discoveries such as a 1959 episode of Double Your Money and the remaining missing episode of Around the World with Orson Welles, found by Ray Langstone in 2011.

It was given currency in English partly by the writings of Peter Brown, whose survey The World of Late Antiquity ( 1971 ) revised the post-Gibbon view of a stale and ossified Classical culture, in favour of a vibrant time of renewals and beginnings, and whose The Making of Late Antiquity offered a new paradigm of understanding the changes in Western culture of the time in order to confront Sir Richard Southern's The Making of the Middle Ages.

On the basis of Southern's treatment, Raybert Productions, which had produced the TV series The Monkees and the Monkees movie Head, agreed to finance the film with a budget of US $ 350, 000 ( in return for one-third of the profits ), with Columbia Pictures agreeing to distribute the film.

Improved highways and an increasing willingness among passengers to drive to airports farther away for more convenient flights made many of Southern's routes obsolete.

Southern interviewed Algren for the Paris Review in the autumn of 1955 and they became good friends ; they remained in touch after the interview and Algren became another of Southern's early champions.

The site is currently the Network Rail's ECR and infrastructure maintenance depot, and Southern's Lovers Walk Depot, used for servicing most of Southern's single voltage Class 377 Electrostar fleet and their newly acquired Class 442s and Class 313s.

In 1992 Norfolk Southern's trucking operations, including NAVL, recorded a loss of close to $ 40 million, and Norfolk Southern Corp. decided to sell off two of its trucking divisions in 1993, although it retained NAVL for another five years.

After the line from Meridian, Mississippi, to New Orleans, Louisiana was acquired in 1916 under Southern's president Fairfax Harrison, the railroad had assembled the 8, 000-mile, 13-state system that lasted for almost half a century.
