Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe ( October 31, 1857, Oskarshamn, Sweden – February 11, 1949, Stockholm ) was a Swedish psychiatrist, best known as the author of The Story of San Michele, an autobiographical account of his life and work.
An anecdote relates that Munthe was discussing publication of The Story of San Michele with his publisher, John Murray, in the garden at Southside, and Murray related that his ancestor of the same name had sat in the same garden with Lord Byron, discussing publication of Byron's works.
At this point he returned to Sweden for a number of years and wrote The Story of San Michele ( published in 1929 ), which was well received, having been translated into at least forty-five languages and said to be one of the best-selling books of the 20th century.
