Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe ( October 31, 1857, Oskarshamn, Sweden – February 11, 1949, Stockholm ) was a Swedish psychiatrist, best known as the author of The Story of San Michele, an autobiographical account of his life and work.

An anecdote relates that Munthe was discussing publication of The Story of San Michele with his publisher, John Murray, in the garden at Southside, and Murray related that his ancestor of the same name had sat in the same garden with Lord Byron, discussing publication of Byron's works.

At this point he returned to Sweden for a number of years and wrote The Story of San Michele ( published in 1929 ), which was well received, having been translated into at least forty-five languages and said to be one of the best-selling books of the 20th century.

The Story of San Michele overshadows Munthe's other publications, and includes material from some of his earlier work.

Similar to many large bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Brisbane's Story Bridge has become notorious as a suicide hotspot.

In addition, he was a regular cast member in the Rod Serling western series The Loner ( which lasted one season from 1965 to 1966 ; Bridges pulled out in disagreement over the violent content of the show ), and in the two NBC failures San Francisco International Airport ( 1970 / 71 ) and a Police Story spin-off Joe Forrester ( 1975 – 76 ).

Memoirs set on Capri include Edwin Cerio's Aria di Capri ( 1928 ) ( translated as That Capri Air ), which contains a number of historical and biographical essays on the island, including a tribute to Norman Douglas ; The Story of San Michele ( 1929 ) by Swedish royal physician Axel Munthe ( 1857 – 1949 ), who built a villa of that name and Shirley Hazzard's Greene on Capri: A Memoir ( 2000 ), about her reminiscences of Graham Greene.

The few remains of the Tiberian villa Damecuta are the result of excavations done between 1937-48 by Maiuri ( who also excavated Villa Jovis ), on land donated to the Italian Government by Axel Munthe, celebrated author of The Story of San Michele.
