The works dealing with the Old Testament included Commentary on Samuel, Commentary on Genesis, Commentaries on Ezra and Nehemiah, On the Temple, On the Tabernacle, Commentaries on Tobit, Commentaries on Proverbs, Commentaries on the Song of Songs, Commentaries on the Canticle of Habakkuk, The works on Ezra, the Tabernacle and the Temple were especially influenced by Gregory the Great's writings.

According to John J. Collins in his 1993 commentary, Daniel, Hermeneia Commentary, the Aramaic in Daniel is of a later form than that used in the Samaria correspondence, but slightly earlier than the form used in the Dead Sea Scrolls, meaning that the Aramaic chapters 2-6 may have been written earlier in the Hellenistic period than the rest of the book, with the vision in chapter 7 being the only Aramaic portion dating to the time of Antiochus.

Contrary to the above, the Expositor's Bible Commentary ( Zondervan, 1990 ) says that the language of Daniel, in comparison with the Hebrew and Aramaic texts of the Hellenistic period, " prove quite conclusively to any scholar that the second-century date and Palestinian provenance of the Book of Daniel cannot be upheld any longer without violence being done to the science of linguistics.

His Commentary on Daniel was expressly written to offset the criticisms of Porphyry, who taught that Daniel related entirely to the time of Antiochus IV Epiphanes and was written by an unknown individual living in the 2nd century BC.

The 25 December Nativity of Christ was attested very early by Hippolytus of Rome ( 170 – 236 ) in his Commentary on Daniel 4: 23: “ The first coming of our Lord, that in the flesh, in which he was born at Bethlehem, took place eight days before the calends of January, a Wednesday, in the forty-second year of the reign of Augustus, 5500 years from Adam .” Another early source is Theophilus Bishop of Caesarea ( 115-181 ):" We ought to celebrate the birth-day of our Lord on what day soever the 25th of December shall happen.

The International Committee of the Red Cross ’ s Commentary on the Additional Protocols of 8 June 1977 to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 similarly elaborates that “ other forms of non-participation in a conflict have been added to neutrality as defined by treaty and customary law ,” and that “ it would have sufficed to use the expression ‘ not engaged in the conflict ’ or ‘ not Party to the conflict ’” in lieu of using the term ‘ neutral .’ The Commentary explicitly states that the term ‘ neutral ’ “ should be interpreted as covering non-participation in conflicts in general, as well as neutrality in the proper sense of the word .” Therefore, all non-belligerence is a form of neutrality, which means that neutrality includes the entire range of states not formally participating in international armed conflict such as de facto belligerents, non-participants who do not claim neutrality, temporary declared neutrals, and even long-standing neutrals.

Origen did this in his Commentary on Matthew when he taught that “ Christ ’ s return signifies His disclosure of Himself and His deity to all humanity in such a way that all might partake of His glory to the degree that each individual ’ s actions warrant ( Commentary on Matthew 12. 30 ).” Even Origen ’ s milder forms of this teaching left no room for a literal millennium and it was so extreme that few actually followed it.

Didymus the Blind held a source he calls " the Gospel of the Hebrews " to be informative when he explains that there are many people with two names, that scripture calls Matthew “ Levi ” in the Gospel of Luke, but they are not the same person ( Psalm Commentary 3 )
