Cogidubnus / Togidubnus is known from a reference to his loyalty in Tacitus's Agricola, and from an inscription commemorating a temple dedicated to Neptune and Minerva found in nearby Chichester.

A 1st century inscription found in Chichester supplies his Latin names, indicating he was given Roman citizenship by Claudius or Nero.

Likewise, the theory that Cogidubnus was created legatus, a rank only ever given to senators, is based on reconstructing the damaged Chichester inscription to read as Cogidubni regis legati Augusti in Britannia (" king and imperial legate in Britain ").

A damaged inscription, naming him ".. gidubnus ", places him in Chichester.

He is also known from an inscription on a damaged slab of marble, found in Chichester in 1723 and datable to the late 1st century.

As the Chichester inscription supports Tacitus, Cunliffe's interpretation would appear to imply an error in Dio's Roman History or in its transmission, and some, including John Hind, have argued that Dio misinterpreted his sources as reading that Togodumnus had died when he had merely been defeated.

According to the inscription upon it, this cross was built by Edward Story, Bishop of Chichester from 1477 to 1503 ; but little is known for certain and the style and ornaments of the building suggest that it may date from the reign of Edward IV.

An inscription from Chichester, recorded by Samuel Woodford in his Inscriptionum Romano-Britannicarum Conllectio ( 1658 ) but since lost, refers to Sallustius Lucullus, giving his praenomen as Gaius and describing him as a propraetorian legate of the emperor Domitian.

Another inscription from Chichester, discovered in 1923, refers to a " Lucullus, son of Amminus ".

Miles Russell of Bournemouth University argues that Sallustius Lucullus, Roman governor of Britain in the late 1st century ( and who is also cited from an inscription found in Chichester ), was therefore a son of this prince.

An inscription by Cogidubnus found in Chichester may mention a " Pudens ", although the inscription is damaged so this is not certain, and the way the name is written makes it unlikely that person referred to was a Roman citizen.

A few years later the first chapel dedicated to him, St Edmund's Chapel, was consecrated in Dover by his friend Richard of Chichester ( making it the only chapel dedicated to one English saint by another ).
