The main traditional types of church music sung during Holy Week are " Passions ", musical settings of the Gospel narratives, both a Catholic and Lutheran tradition, and settings of the readings and responses from the Catholic Tenebrae services, especially those of the Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet.

According to director Mel Gibson, the primary source material for The Passion of the Christ is the four Gospel narratives of Christ's passion.

It draws out from the historical objectivity of the Gospel narratives sentiments of forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation.

According to all four gospels, the empty tomb led to the revelation of Jesus ' resurrection, implicitly in the canonical Gospel of Mark ( without the later endings ) and explicitly in the other three canonical gospel narratives.

A number of hypotheses regarding the origin of the gospel accounts exist, e. g. the Markan priority hypothesis which suggests that the Gospel of Mark influenced both Luke and Matthew, but that the birth narratives come from the evangelists ' independent sources, known as M-Source for Matthew and L source for Luke, which were added later.

The storyline of Jesus of Nazareth is a kind of cinematic Diatessaron, or “ Gospel harmony ”, blending the narratives of all four New Testament accounts.

In the 19th century important scholarship was done by David Strauss, Ernest Renan, Johannes Weiss, Albert Schweitzer and others, all of whom investigated the " historical Jesus " within the Gospel narratives.

In the Late Antique period iconography began to be standardised, and to relate more closely to Biblical texts, although many gaps in the canonical Gospel narratives were plugged with matter from the apocryphal gospels.

Due to the Gospel parallels, the story of Toldoth Yeshu narratives is typically viewed as a derogatory account of the life of Jesus resulting from Jewish reaction to persecution by Christians.

Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, who has written presenting the infancy narratives and John ’ s Gospel as historically reliable, was personally complimentary of Brown and his scholarship, and has been quoted as saying he " would be very happy if we had many exegetes like Father Brown ".

The church promotes belief in the historicity of the Gospel narratives, an orthodox Christian understanding of Jesus and The Trinity, Original sin, a pro-life stance to abortion, and an Evangelical belief in the Great Commission.

He believes the " Cross Gospel " was the forerunner to the passion narratives in the canonical gospels.

The Acts of John is a collection of narratives and traditions concerning John the Apostle, well described as a " library of materials ", inspired by the Gospel of John, long known in fragmentary form.

* Some Protestant scholars have argued that Christian Sunday worship traces back even further, to the resurrection appearances of Jesus recorded in the Gospel narratives where Jesus would appear to his disciples on the first day of the week.

Further support is lent to the theory when Jesus ' body in the Gospel narratives is quickly whisked away and hidden from public view.

Orchard countered the claim that the Gospel of Mark must have been written first, since it contains less information than Matthew and Luke, by positing that Peter elected not to speak on certain subjects, such as the birth and resurrection narratives, since he had not been a direct witness of those events.

Gospel writer Mark gives no description of the resurrected Jesus, perhaps because Mark did not want to try to describe the nature of the divine resurrected Jesus.

Incarnation and grace appear as technical terms to describe the central message of the Gospel: God has communicated Himself.

The first Gospels were written against this background of Hellenistic and Jewish belief in miracles and other wondrous acts as signs-the term is explicitly used in the Gospel of John to describe Jesus ' miracles-seen to be validating the credentials of divine wise men.

The Synoptic Gospels describe him as the " Son of God ", though the phrase " Son of Man " ( always placed in the mouth of Jesus himself ) is more frequently used in the Gospel of Mark ; born of the Virgin Mary by the agency of the Holy Spirit, and who will return to judge the nations.

The narrative uses the Greek phrase ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι hygies genesthai, which is not used anywhere in the Synoptic Gospels, but appears frequently in ancient testimonies to the healing powers of Asclepius ; the later narrative in the Gospel of John about Jesus washing Simon Peter's feet at the Last Supper, similarly uses the Greek term λούειν louein, which is a special term for washing in an Asclepieion, rather than the Greek word used elsewhere in the Johannine text to describe washing-νίπτειν niptein.

Oxyrhynchus 654 had a heading which seems to describe the work as a collection of " sayings " addressed to Thomas and some other disciple, and when the Nag Hammadi Gospel of Thomas was discovered in 1945, it was identified as a Coptic version of the Greek work of which these two were fragments.

* Christian theology can use the term " Spirit " to describe God, or aspects of God — as in the " Holy Spirit ", referring to a Triune God ( Trinity )( cf Gospel of Matthew 28: 19 ).

A few of Mary's sayings, also recorded in the Gospel, particularly the Magnificat ( the words Mary is reported to have said to describe the experience of being pregnant with Jesus ), disclose new features in Marian psychology.

In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus is quoted in Greek ( although his historical utterance would most likely have been in Aramaic ) using the word " παλιγγενεσια " (" palingenesia ") to describe the Last Judgment foreshadowing the event of the regeneration of a new world.

The Gospel of Luke depicts prayer as a certain feature in Jesus's life.

Under the particular historical circumstances of the growing Church in the early centuries, the succession of bishops became one of the ways, together with the transmission of the Gospel and the life of the community, in which the apostolic tradition of the Church was expressed.

Article 25 of the Thirty-Nine Articles, speaking of the sacraments, says: " Those five commonly called Sacraments, that is to say, Confirmation, Penance, Orders, Matrimony, and extreme Unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel, being such as have grown partly of the corrupt following of the Apostles, partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures ; but yet have not like nature of Sacraments with Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, for that they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of God.

In short, the Gospel is news of God the Father's eternal victory over evil, and the promise of salvation and eternal life for all people, through divine grace.

The rich are either unconvinced by the promise of eternal life, or unaware of the conflict between the possession of material and spiritual wealth, and the good Christian has a duty to guide them towards a better life through the Gospel.

Item, take note that this office calls for excellency of life, so that just as the preacher speaks from a raised position, so he may also preach the Gospel from the mountain of an excellent life "

The Gospel of Barnabas is a book depicting the life of Jesus, and claiming to be by Jesus ' disciple Barnabas, who in this work is one of the twelve apostles.

Bultmonn said, “ As from now on there are only believers and unbelievers, so there are also now only saved and lost, those who have life and those who are in death ” – Rudolf Bultmann, The Gospel of John, p. 155

Although the Separatists supported civil government, the group refused to make a physical oath in its support, " for according to the Gospel not oath is allowed him who gives evidence of a righteous life as an upright man.

Along with some other rapture fiction novels, the Left Behind series demonstrates a specific understanding of the Gospel and the Christian life, one with which many have taken issue theologically.

If one accepts that Luke was in fact the author of the Gospel bearing his name and also the Acts of the Apostles, certain details of his personal life can be reasonably assumed.

A similar anointing is described in the Gospel of Luke as occurring at the home of one Simon the Pharisee in which a woman who had been sinful all her life, and who was crying, anointed Jesus ' feet and, when her tears started to fall on his feet, she wiped them with her hair.

Another Scripture text that Catholics generally understand as related to the Eucharist is the Gospel of John's account of Jesus as saying: " Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you … he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him " (), a statement that he did not tone down when, as a result, many of his disciples then abandoned him (), shocked at the idea.

: If any one will piously and soberly consider the sermon which our Lord Jesus Christ spoke on the mount, as we read it in the Gospel according to Matthew, I think that he will find in it, so far as regards the highest morals, a perfect standard of the Christian life

In the Gospel of John 3: 14 – 15, Jesus makes direct comparison between the raising up of the Son of Man and the act of Moses in raising up the serpent as a sign, using it as a symbol associated with salvation: " As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life ".

The Infancy Gospel of James is attributed to James the Just but was certainly written no later than the 2nd century ; it lays out additional details of Mary's life.

The later years of his life were spent in comparative quiet, devoted in part to the preparation of his expositions of the Psalms ( Tractatus super Psalmos ), for which he was largely indebted to Origen ; of his Commentarius in Evangelium Matthaei, an allegorical exegesis of the first Gospel ; and of his no longer extant translation of Origen's commentary on Job.

Finzi ’ s choral music includes the popular anthems Lo, the full, final sacrifice and God is gone up as well as unaccompanied partsongs, but he also wrote larger-scale choral works such as For St. Cecilia ( text by Edmund Blunden ), Intimations of Immortality ( William Wordsworth ) and the Christmas scene In terra pax ( Robert Bridges and the Gospel of Luke ), all from the last ten years of his life.

" Unlike previous cinematic depictions of Jesus ' life, Pasolini's film does not embellish the biblical account with any literary or dramatic inventions, nor does it present an amalgam of the four Gospels ( subsequent films which would adhere as closely as possible to one Gospel account are 1979's Jesus, based on the Gospel of Luke, and 2003's The Gospel of John ).

Gospel music is music that is written to express either personal, spiritual or a communal belief regarding Christian life, as well as ( in terms of the varying music styles ) to give a Christian alternative to mainstream secular music.
