Limuru is a town located on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley about 30 miles North-West from Nairobi the capital city of Kenya.

With the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, the fort was renamed James Fort, the town Jamestown and the valley James Valley, all in honour of the Duke of York, later James II of England.

The town was formed by European-American settlers in 1829, when westbound settlers and traders decided they liked the area.

Founded on March 12, 1861, the town holds a history of traders traveling along the " Indian Trail ," which ran from Petersburg, Virginia, to the Waxhaw Indians, and gold mining.

Isaac Thomas ( 1735 ?- 1818 ), the most notable of these early traders, was well respected by the Cherokee, and may have lived at the Overhill town of Chota at one time.

The railway through the town is the location of St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway, and has served as a trade center for local farmers and traders.

For one weekend each year, French market traders sell their produce in the town, with Chorley's merchants returning the favour in France.

The idea behind it was an outgrowth of the guild system, as guilds were monopolistic enterprises: they regulated trade within towns by controlling the creation of goods, regulated themselves through their system of apprenticeship, kept outside traders from selling goods in the town, and forced outsiders to pay tolls and other types of payments for the privilege of doing business in that town.

Annual horse fairs would bring many other traders to the town, and the weekly market would be the occasion for more local trade.
