The original roadway connecting Beech Grove to Indianapolis was Churchman Avenue, running northwest from Beech Grove.

Its name was changed to Senate Avenue which is on the near west side of Indianapolis.

Beech Grove maintains a distinct address-numbering system from surrounding Indianapolis.

The growth of Indianapolis toward Beech Grove, and the distinctness of both cities, led to the unusual result of different names for certain roadways.

Although geographically completely surrounded by Indianapolis, Beech Grove maintains its own police, fire, public works, and parks departments and operates its own public library and senior-citizens ' center.

The Beech Grove hospital closed in 2012 after most medical services were transferred to a more modern, suburban hospital campus in south Indianapolis.

Beech Grove grew with two annexations after World War II, with the final one ( 1967 ) taking place just before the Uni-Gov legislation which merged Indianapolis with most of the rest of Marion County, preventing future annexation.

McQueen was born Terence Steven McQueen in Beech Grove, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, in Marion County.

Originally called Webb Parmelee Hollenbeck, Webb was born in a rural part of Marion County, Indiana, which would, in 1906, become Beech Grove, a self-governing city entirely surrounded by Indianapolis.

From January through April 2011, Amtrak's Beech Grove shops in Indianapolis released the units and sent them north on the Hoosier State ( Train 851 ).
