Bad Religion made a progressive rock album with Into the Unknown, the Beastie Boys gained fame by playing hip hop, and Bad Brains incorporated more reggae into their music, such as in their 1989 album Quickness.

Two more Bad Religion releases followed – Into the Unknown and the EP Back to the Known – before their temporary split.

In 1983, the band released Into the Unknown, a keyboard-driven album with a slightly slower pace.

This compilation did not include Into the Unknown.

In April 2004, the band also re-released digitally-remastered versions of all of their first six studio albums on Epitaph Records ( except Into the Unknown ).

On October 18, 2010, Bad Religion released a vinyl box set of all their albums that is limited to 3000 copies, including their 1983 album Into the Unknown, which had been out of print for over 25 years.

Like Bad Religion's first four albums ( minus Into the Unknown ), Epitaph Records released a remastered version of Generator on April 6, 2004, with two exclusive tracks that were taken from the split 7 " with Noam Chomsky issued by Maximum Rock ' N Roll in 1991.

Robert Christgau's review of Into the Unknown was more favorable than that of How Could Hell Be Any Worse ?, which received a B rating, whereas Into the Unknown was given a A-rating.

" John Dougan of Allmusic says that Into the Unknown is " a bit off-putting at first blush, mainly because the tempos are slower and more deliberate, and because of the use of swirling organs and pianos ", while he calls it a " terrific record that was perhaps more daring than anyone realized at the time of its release.

Into the Unknown is Bad Religion's most controversial release.

Into the Unknown has never been released on CD, although one reissue was released in 2004 on Epitaph as a bootleg.

In December, the band released the vinyl box set 30 Years of Bad Religion, which reissued all 15 of the band's LPs, including Into the Unknown.
