It is the basis for Coordinated Universal Time ( UTC ), which is used for civil timekeeping all over the Earth's surface, and for Terrestrial Time, which is used for astronomical calculations.

UTC is a discontinuous time scale composed from segments that are linear transformations of atomic time, the discontinuities being arranged so that UTC approximated UT2 until the end of 1971, and UT1 thereafter.

It is instrumental for keeping time, in that UTC is basically the atomic time synchronized to Earth's rotation by means of exact observations.

During a 1935 – 1942 colonization attempt, the island was most likely on Hawaii time, which was then 10. 5 hours behind UTC .< ref > Since it is uninhabited the island's time zone is unspecified, but it lies within a nautical time zone 12 hours behind UTC.

It is used with UTC in the Internet date / time format ( see the external link below ).

Local time is UTC + 06: 00 year-round ( DST is not observed ).

This will require the addition of an ever greater number of leap seconds to UTC as long as UTC is kept within one second of UT1.

UTC Power continues to be the sole supplier of fuel cells to NASA for use in space vehicles, having supplied fuel cells for the Apollo missions, and the Space Shuttle program, and is developing fuel cells for automobiles, buses, and cell phone towers.

It is arguably the same as Coordinated Universal Time ( UTC ) and when this is viewed as a time zone the name Greenwich Mean Time is especially used by bodies connected with the United Kingdom, such as the BBC World Service, the Royal Navy, the Met Office and others particularly in Arab countries, such as the Middle East Broadcasting Center and OSN.
