Earl Shilton Community College ( a college with a sixth form ) in Leicestershire was renamed in honor of its neighboring village's famous son and is now William Bradford Community College.

In 1873, he founded the town of Norris, now within the boundaries of Detroit but then in Wayne County and built the Two Way Inn, which was originally the village's jail and general store.

As early as the 1750s, residents used to race their horses along what is now Main Street in the village's downtown.

The village's first inn was built in 1769 on the property that is now the site of the Equinox House.

The village's close proximity to the M4 motorway ( and, thus, its close proximity to London ) has meant that Dorney is now an area popular with city commuters.

A number of the village's pubs have become restaurants ; two of which now serve Indian cuisine.

The site of the village's main pit, the Busty, is now a privately owned coach garage.

The village's single public house, now closed, was called the Rayleigh Arms, Lord Rayleigh being the title of the head of the Strutt baronage who live in the manor house, Terling Place.

A stream tributary of the Mithi river, which served the Powai village's water supply needs, was dammed in 1891, during the British period, initially to augment water supply to the Bombay city ( now called Mumbai ), by constructing two dams of 10 m height each to store the rain waters flowing from the lower slopes of the Western Ghats and streams from the eastern and northeastern slopes of hills.

The Church had and has now a big influence on the village's life.

One of the village's oldest buildings, the Hilden Manor restaurant owned by Beefeater, was burnt down by a fire caused by an electrical fault, and has now been restored and rebuilt by Oaklands.

The village's main employer today is the Correctional Service of Canada, which operates a prison complex now comprising the medium-security ( once maximum-security ) Dorchester Penitentiary, and the minimum-security Westmorland Institution.

Although previously known as " Hamble ", " Hamelea ", " Hammel ", and " Ham-en-le-Rice ", the village's official name is now Hamble-le-Rice.

The estate was acquired by Essex County Council in 1950 and is now the village's community centre.

The only remaining building of the Rochfort era that still stands in the village is the Protestant church, just off what is now the village's main street.

Rainford Junction is so called because it contained the junction between the Liverpool and Bury Railway's Skelmersdale Branch and St. Helens Railway, and is now home to the village's only railway station.

With the decline in agricultural employment in the area, the village's character changed and it is now primarily occupied by people whose work is elsewhere.
