Although it has become quite accepted that Levi ben Gerson first described Jacob's staff, the Sinologist Joseph Needham theorizes that the Song Dynasty Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ), in his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, described a Jacob's staff.

In his recent edition of the oldest surviving manuscript ( BR / KB Brussel, Ms. 15001 ) Maurits Gysseling treats Jacob's Josephus-translation as belonging to the Comestor-translation, yet it is a different text which Jacob named Die wrake van Jherusalem ( The vengeance of Jeruzalem ), thereby showing his interpretation of what happened – and why it happened – during the Jewish revolt against the Roman oppressors, which ended in the capture of Jeruzalem and the destruction of the Temple by emperor Vespasianus ' son Titus in AD 70.

The Japanese polymath Hiraga Gennai 平賀源内 ( 1729 – 1779 ) constructed a Jacob's ladder which later came to be called " Gennai's Wondrous Click-clack " ( Gennai no fushigina katakata 源内の不思議なカタカタ ).

The first book which was illustrated in this way was the Book of Esther ( Le livre d ' Esther, 1925 ), followed by Gustave Flaubert's dialogue The Temptation of Saint Anthony ( La tentation de Saint Antoine, 1926 ), Pierre Benoît's novel Jacob's Well ( Le puits e Jacob, 1927 ) and other books.

Jacob's most serious work in the field of romance was his Historie van Troyen ( c. 1264 ), a poem of some forty thousand lines, translated and amplified from the Roman de Troie of Benoît de Sainte-Maure.

Jacob's most extensive work is the Spiegel Historiael, a rhymed chronicle of the world, translated, with omissions and important additions, from the Speculum historiale of Vincent de Beauvais.

Elsewhere in the Qur ' an, Isaac is mentioned in lists: Joseph follows the religion of his forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ( XII: 38 ) and speaks of God's favor to them ( XII: 6 ); Jacob's sons all testify their faith and promise to worship the God that their forefathers, " Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac ", worshiped ( II: 127 ); and the Qur ' an commands Muslims to believe in the revelations that were given to " Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Patriarchs " ( II: 136 ; III: 84 ).

After Jacob died there 17 years later, Joseph carried Jacob's remains to the land of Canaan, where he gave them stately burial in the same Cave of Machpelah as were buried Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Jacob's wife, Leah ().

Near Luz en route to Haran, Jacob experienced a vision of a ladder, or staircase, reaching into heaven with angels going up and down it, commonly referred to as " Jacob's ladder ".

Arriving in Haran, Jacob saw a well where shepherds were gathering their flocks to water them and met Laban's younger daughter, Rachel, Jacob's first cousin ; she was working as a shepherdess.

The text suggests that Jacob performed breeding experiments over the years to make his own flocks both more abundant and stronger than Laban's, that Laban responded by repeatedly reinterpreting the terms of Jacob's wages, and that the breeding favored Jacob regardless of Laban's pronouncements.

Dinah's brothers, Simeon and Levi, agreed in Jacob's name to permit the marriage as long as all the men of Shechem first circumcised themselves, ostensibly to unite the children of Jacob in Abraham's covenant of familial harmony.

Although the death of Rebecca, Jacob's mother, is not explicitly recorded in the Bible, Deborah, Rebecca's nurse, died and was buried at Bethel, at a place that Jacob calls Allon Bachuth ( אלון בכות ), " Oak of Weepings " ( Genesis 35: 8 ).

Jacob then made a further move while Rachel was pregnant ; near Bethlehem, Rachel went into labor and died as she gave birth to her second son, Benjamin ( Jacob's twelfth son ).

Jacob then settled in Migdal Eder, where his firstborn, Reuben, slept with Rachel's servant Bilhah ; Jacob's response was not given at the time, but he did condemn Reuben for it later, in his deathbed blessing.

When Laban planned to deceive Jacob into marrying Leah instead of Rachel, the Midrash recounts that both Jacob and Rachel suspected that Laban would pull such a trick ; Laban was known as the " Aramean " ( deceiver ), and changed Jacob's wages ten times during his employ ( Genesis 31: 7 ).

In contrast to the Judeo-Christian view of Jacob, one main difference is that the story of Jacob's blessing, in which he deceives Isaac, is not accepted in Islam.

Muhammad ’ s famous Night Journey, when the prophet travelled through the Heavens, has been seen by scholars as the obvious prophetic parallel to Jacob ’ s equally famous vision of Jacob's Ladder coming down from the Heavens.

Jacob, who had deceived and cheated his brother, is in turn deceived and cheated by his relative Laban concerning Jacob's seven years of service ( lacking money for a dowry ) for the hand of Rachel, receiving Leah instead.
