Charles and the Duke of Buckingham, James's favourite and a man who had great influence over the prince, together travelled incognito to Spain in 1623 in an attempt to reach agreement on the long-pending Spanish Match.

The low church Whigs had failed in their attempt to pass the Exclusion Bill to exclude James from the throne between 1679 and 1681, and James's supporters were the high church Anglican Tories.

James's attempt to introduce religious toleration to England's Roman Catholics alienated his Protestant subjects.

Its development followed an unsuccessful attempt by members of the Anglican church to incorporate the earlier St James's College within the new University of Sydney, and was led by Sir Alfred Stephen ( Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales ).

The Thomasville, Tallahassee and Gulf Railroad was incorporated under the general incorporation laws of Florida to build, maintain, and operate a railroad from a point on the line between the cities of Tallahassee, in the State of Florida, and Thomasville, in the State of Georgia, through the counties of Leon, Wakulla and Franklin, in the State of Florida, passing through Tallahassee and terminating on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, at or near Carrabelle, on James's Island, in Franklin county, a distance of about seventy miles.

James's greatest political problem was his Catholicism, which left him alienated from both parties in England.

James's supporters controlled much of Ireland and the Irish Parliament.

James's loss of nerve and speedy exit from the battlefield enraged his Irish supporters, who fought on until the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 ; he was derisively nicknamed Seamus a ' chaca (" James the shit ") in Irish.

Until Salisbury's death, the Elizabethan administrative system over which he had presided continued to function with relative efficiency ; from this time forward, however, James's government entered a period of decline and disrepute.

Since Willson, however, the stability of James's government in Scotland and in the early part of his English reign, as well as his relatively enlightened views on religion and war, have earned him a re-evaluation from many historians, who have rescued his reputation from this tradition of criticism.

It was a risky venture ; any of Black James's heavily armed men could have hacked the Earl's arm off ; however, James shook his hand and ended the dispute.

It cannot have been difficult for the conspirators to secure James's compliance because he disliked Overbury's influence over Carr.
