The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari () is a 1920 German silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer.

Writers Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer first met in Berlin soon after World War I.

At night, Janowitz and Mayer often went to a nearby fair.

Inspired by this, Janowitz and Mayer devised their story that night and wrote it in the following six weeks.

The screenplay was written by Hans Janowitz, who collaborated with Carl Mayer on the script for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ( 1919 ).

Janowitz and Mayer protested the change, but it was made anyway over their objections, and Lang left the project to direct another film.

On the other hand, Janowitz argued that civic participation should be encouraged in American society through the model of the citizen-soldier, but failed to elucidate how such a model would be propagated in the absence of mass-mobilization for major wars.

This led Janowitz to develop a dichotomous epistemic framework, consisting of two competing perspectives about the proper use of the armed forces in international relations.

Taken together, pragmatism effected Janowitz outlook in such a way that had the overall effect of linking data with theory and generating a research agenda focusing on experimental methods of empirical research ( 28 ).

Among Erdman's other important works of the 1940s were Daughters of the Lonesome Isle ( 1945 ) and Ophelia ( 1946 ) with commissioned scores by John Cage on prepared and standard piano respectively, Passage ( 1946 ) with a commissioned score by Otto Janowitz, Hamadryad ( 1948 ) to Debussy's Syrinx, The Perilous Chapel ( 1949 ) and Solstice ( 1950 ), both with commissioned scores by Lou Harrison.

By the Shores of Gitchee Gumee ( 1996 ) is a satirical novel by Tama Janowitz about the Slivenowiczes, a trailer park trash family who are forced to leave their home in a polluted swamp area in upstate New York ( as Maud claims on p. 194 of the hardcover version ) and who beg, steal and borrow their way across the United States until they end up in Hollywood.

Janowitz also founded the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society, as well as the journal Armed Forces & Society.

During his last year at Michigan, Janowitz organized a group of scholars around the founding of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society ( IUS ) to " support development of sociological analyses of military organization ; to prepare a series of specific research papers on internal military organization ; and to serve as a focal point for long-term training in and for the development of a relationship between sociology and the military establishment "( 17 ).

Janowitz remained in the department until his retirement in 1987, focusing more heavily on his academic pursuits, which culminated into a trilogy of books published between 1976 and 1983: Social Control of the Welfare State, The Last Half-Century, and The Reconstruction of Patriotism.

Janowitz died one year after retirement in 1988 on November 7 from Parkinson's disease ( 8 ).

This led Janowitz to cultivate and develop his ideas about military sociology through a Fulbright Fellowship in 1954 and a fellowship at the Center of Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in 1958, where in 1960 he completed his first major publication on military sociology, The Professional Soldier: A Social and Political Portrait ( 13 ).

Janowitz, however, an admirer of John Dewey, identified a broader meta-theoretical framework for sociological inquiry that rejected grand idealist theories about the ultimate truth of reality, focusing instead on " social relations and contexts were always overlapping and interpenetrating, leading empirically to a dynamic social organization which was never more than partially integrated or relatively autonomous.

Janowitz also emphasized systemic analysis, attributed to Harold Laswell, which " relies on overlapping hypotheses about differentiated, concrete objects of analysis embedded in a larger social setting "( 26 ).

Janowitz appeared on many of the great stages of the world, including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Salzburg Easter Festivals, the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opéra, the Royal Opera House.

Janowitz then worked with another two movies by F. W. Murnau.

He was regarded as one of the so-called literary Brat Pack, which also included Tama Janowitz and Jay McInerney.

Towards the end of his stay at Michigan, Janowitz took an academic fellowship, during which he completed his first major publication, The Professional Soldier.

In The Professional Soldier Janowitz used a methodology which included content analysis, a survey of 760 generals and admirals and 576 military officers from the Pentagon, and interviews of over 100 high-level officers ( 995 ).

Both theories concerned the preservation of liberal democracy: Huntington advocated a liberal theory of " objective civilian control " of the military to protect American democracy from foreign threats, while Janowitz advocated a more civic-republican theory, which encouraged active interconnectedness between civil society and the military in order to foster a greater sense of civic participation.

In The Professional Soldier, Janowitz noted during the Vietnam era a prolonged debate in the officer corp " about the legitimacy of strategic objectives and specific military tactics ," which unfolded under two dominant perspectives about the appropriate role of the military in international relations: absolutist and pragmatist.

In 1936, Bela Lugosi, while filming in England, was offered the part of " Caligari " in a sound remake, but returned to work in the U. S. During the 1940s, writer Hans Janowitz seemed close to selling his rights in a script to be directed by Fritz Lang, but neither that nor his plans for a sequel, Caligari II, came to fruition.
