Jean's mutant powers of telepathy and telekinesis first manifest when her best friend is hit by a car and killed.

When the Professor hides to prepare for the Z ' Nox, he reopens Jean's telepathic abiliites, which was initially explained by writers as Xavier ' sharing ' some of his telepathy with her.

After several missions with the X-Men, Xavier removes Jean's mental blocks and she is able to use and control her telepathic powers.

Jean's discovery of the psychic affair results in a confrontation between her and Emma, though ultimately Jean realizes that her marriage to Scott has run its course and that Emma truly loves him.

When transformed into Phoenix, Jean's powers escalate to an incalculable level, allowing her to rearrange or disintegrate matter at a subatomic level, fly unaided through space, survive in any atmosphere, and manipulate electromagnetic and cosmic energies for various effects and atmospheric disturbances.

In the initial plotline of the Phoenix being a manifestation of Jean's true potential, these powers are considered her own, as part of Claremont and Byrne's desire to create " the first cosmic superheroine.

Inside what appears to be the White Hot Room or possibly just Emma's own mind, a woman resembling Jean Grey appears to Emma and helps her break free of Regan's influence with what appears to be a miniature version of the Phoenix energy raptor, thus letting her assist Logan, who has been robbed of a lock of Jean's hair that was in his possession.

Madelyne uses the hair sample to locate Jean's gravesite, and then attempts to repeat a resurrection ritual with her corpse, but Cyclops had ordered Domino to substitute the body for someone elses and it somehow causes Madelyne to either discorporate or become absorbed into the fake.

This causes a split in Jean's psyche — between Jean Grey and the Phoenix ( what her dual personality calls itself ) with Jean whose limited powers were always in her control, and the dormant side, " The Phoenix ," a purely instinctual creature.

In the MacLaren home, Jean's friends help her pack her things to move into Charlie's home (" Jeannie's Packin ' Up ").

Now separated, Jean's con team urges her to close the deal, saying she's got him over a barrel and can make a killing in a settlement.

In the third season, Lionel moves into Jean's house in Holland Park, London, and they marry during the following season.
