It was named Valletta after Jean Parisot de la Valette, the Grand Master who had seen the Order through its victory.

The city is named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion in 1565.

The foundation stone of Valletta was laid by the Grandmaster of the Order, Jean Parisot de la Valette on 28 March 1566.

The body of Jean Parisot de la Valette was entombed there until the construction of St. John's Co-Cathedral.

Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette preferred to stay and ask for aid, which promptly arrived from several quarters, most notably Pope Pius V, who sent not only financial assistance but also the famed military engineer Francesco Laparelli de Cortona.

After four months of successful defence by the Knights, the city was almost captured by the Ottoman army in August 1565, but was recaptured by the Knights under Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette.

The city was given the title Civitas Invicta ( meaning " Unconquered City ") by Grand Master Jean Parisot De La Vallette.

The first evidence for Maltese Cross on Malta appears on the 2 Tarì and 4 Tarì Copper coins of the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Vallette ( Grand Master 1557-1568 ).

In 1557 the Knights elected Jean Parisot de Valette Grand Master of the Order.

However, from pastoral visits that were done during the time of the Knights of the Order of Saint John, this chapel was pulled done upon order by the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette during the Great Siege of 1565.

Several well-known historical figures served time as galley slaves after being captured by the enemy, including the Ottoman corsair and admiral Turgut Reis and the Maltese Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette.

Fra ' Jean Parisot de Valette ( 4 February 1495, Parisot, Rouergue-21 August 1568, Malta ) was a French nobleman and 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, from 1557 to 1568.

He was simply Jean de Valette, nicknamed Parisot.
