He sent Michael Palaiologos and John Doukas, both of whom held the high imperial rank of sebastos, with Byzantine troops, 10 Byzantine ships, and large quantities of gold to invade Apulia ( 1155 ).

John IV Doukas Laskaris ( or Ducas Lascaris ) ( Greek: Ιωάννης Δ ΄ Δούκας Λάσκαρις, Iōannēs IV Doukas Laskaris ) ( December 25, 1250 – c. 1305 ) was emperor of Nicaea from August 18, 1258 to December 25, 1261.

John was a son of Theodore II Doukas Laskaris and Elena of Bulgaria.

A few days after the death of Emperor Theodore II Doukas Laskaris in 1258, Michael Palaiologos instigated a coup against the influential bureaucrat George Mouzalon, becoming joint guardian for the eight-year old Emperor John IV Doukas Laskaris together with the patriarch Arsenios.

In 1253, Michael VIII Palaiologos married Theodora Doukaina Vatatzina, a grandniece of John III Doukas Vatatzes, Emperor of Nicaea.

This situation was exploited by the courtiers, led by Michael Psellos, who influenced Isaac to appoint as his successor Constantine Doukas, to the exclusion of his own brother John Komnenos.

Here he participated in the shambolic acts that crippled the empire ’ s eastern provinces, including his strategic retreat when Caesar John Doukas was confronting Norman mercenary rebels, resulting in the humiliating defeat of the Byzantine army, and the capture of John Doukas.

This plan was undermined by the Caesar John Doukas, and Nikephoros instead married Maria of Alania.

As Alexios was entrusted with substantial armed forces to combat the impending Norman invasion, the Doukas faction, led by the Caesar John, conspired to overthrow Nikephoros and replace him with Alexios.

However, his elevation had antagonised not only the Doukas family, in particular the Caesar, John Doukas who led the opposition of the palace officials to Romanos ' authority, but also the Varangian Guard, who openly expressed their discontent at the marriage of Eudokia.
