While Rosebery neglected the topic of Home Rule, Chamberlain continued to form alliances with the Conservatives, and spoke warily about socialism and the Independent Labour Party, which had one MP, Keir Hardie.

While there, Keir continued his chemical experiments, particularly into the properties of alkalis.

Keir also continued to act on the stage.

Some members of the Labour Party, such as Keir Hardie, also held republican views.

He emigrated to the West Coast of New Zealand in 1906, already a committed socialist, influenced by Scottish left-wing thinkers such as Keir Hardie and Bob Smillie ( both members of the Independent Labour Party ).

As an MP, Puttee came into contact with British Labour MPs such as Keir Hardie and Ramsay Macdonald, and promoted the new British Labour Party ( then known as the Labour Representation Committee ) as a model to emulate.

Indeed, he was fiercely critical of the Labour Party and of key figures within it such as Keir Hardie and Ramsay MacDonald.
