Storylines throughout the decade included: a mystery poison-pen letter received by Elsie Tanner, the 1962 marriage of Ken Barlow and Valerie Tatlock, the death of Martha Longhurst in 1964, the birth of the Barlow twins in 1965, Elsie Tanner's wedding to Steve Tanner as well as a train crashing from the viaduct ( both in 1967 ), the murder of Steve Tanner in 1968, and a coach crash in 1969.

By May 1984, Ken Barlow stood as the only original cast member, after the departures of Ena Sharples ( in 1980 ), Annie Walker ( in 1983 ), Elsie Tanner ( in 1984 ) and Albert Tatlock ( also 1984 ).

Ken Barlow married Deirdre Langton on 27 July 1981.

The feud between Ken Barlow and Mike Baldwin would continue for many years, with Mike even marrying Ken's daughter, Susan.

Only one character from the first episode remains, Ken Barlow ( William Roache ).

Though the rest of the original Barlow family were killed off, Ken has remained the constant link throughout the entire series of Coronation Street.

In 1995, Coronation Street featured a memorable humorous moment when Ken Barlow teaches French to dizzy blonde Raquel Watts, the dialogue went like this:

* William Roache, ( who plays Ken Barlow in Coronation Street ) was born at Ilkeston in 1932, though he now lives at Wilmslow in Cheshire.

In addition, Ed Carroll's contract was not renewed and in October 2005 the station hired Ken Barlow from KARE-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to replace him as chief meteorologist.

When the character returned, the flat was not ready and Ena announced on screen ( to characters Ken Barlow and Albert Tatlock ) that she would return to her flat – but only if she felt like doing so ; it was at this point that Carson became ill with pernicious anaemia and was forced to leave the programme.

A memorial service dedicated to Carson was held at Manchester Cathedral in January 1984, and was attended by several of her Coronation Street colleagues including William Roache ( Ken Barlow ).

She was godmother to James Roache, the son of Bill Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in Coronation Street.

The character is one of the longest-serving in British soap, coming third behind Ken Barlow and Emily Bishop in a 1998 survey assessing character episode appearances in Coronation Street's history.

As a young man, Lewis flat-shared with Ken Morley ( Reg Holdsworth of Coronation Street ) and Andy Carr, actor and screen writer.

On 16 April 1963, an astonishing game at Filbert Street against Manchester United, which saw both Ken Keyworth and Denis Law score a hat-trick each, ended in a 4 – 3 victory for Leicester, which meant Leicester sat top of the First Division and 11 days later Banks put in one of the performances of his career to keep out Liverpool as Leicester beat them 1 – 0 in the FA Cup semi-final despite being completely outplayed all game.

It has been speculated that he may have been Ah Ken who kept a small boarding house on lower Mott Street and rented out bunks to the first Chinese immigrants to arrive in Chinatown.

The trail runs northeastward from the center of the borough ( at the junction of Main Street and Church Street ) towards Califon, through a scenic area outside the borough limits, known as the Ken Lockwood Gorge.

In the 1970s and 1980s in his eleventh-floor, two-room apartment at the Westover Hotel at 253 West 72nd Street, Pomus wrote songs with Dr. John, Ken Hirsch and Willy DeVille for what he said were "... those people stumbling around in the night out there, uncertain or not always so certain of exactly where they fit in and where they were headed.
