Red Hot Chili Peppers were, however, displeased with this version ; Kiedis felt the cover was poorly recreated and, with the omission of the final verse, it lost all personal significance.

The band generally was more worried about Kiedis ' addiction, which was much more open and noticeable to the other members, while Slovak was " much more subtle and much more cunning in his disguise.

The other demo recordings included come from the band's first demo tape are the first the band made and are described in Anthony Kiedis ' autobiography Scar Tissue as being the most prolific sessions the band ever had.

Kiedis told that " Scar Tissue " came to him in a precise moment when he heard the other band members play the music and he felt as if an exterior influx had succeeded in merging the melody and apparent words suddenly came to his unconscious mind.

He then proposed to reinvent the group by having them dress in neon surfer-punk clothing, and have them play really stripped-down, basic 1950s rock n ' roll, with all of the emphasis on Kiedis.

At age fifteen, Kiedis broke his back attempting to jump into a swimming pool from a five-story building, missing the pool by a few inches.

At a performance at a strip club in Hollywood, the band members performed wearing only socks on their penises, an idea created by Kiedis.

Kiedis became dependent on heroin, leaving Flea and Slovak to work on much of the album's material by themselves.

Kiedis was impressed with Frusciante's skill, and astonished by his knowledge of the Chili Peppers ' repertoire.

When Flea asked Kiedis how he felt about Slovak rejoining the band, Kiedis responded by saying " I'd give my firstborn son to get him back in the band.

He was nicknamed " Slim Bob Billy ", " Slim ", or " Huckleberry ", and throughout the albums Kiedis calls him by these nicknames before he starts a guitar solo.

Kiedis commented on the situation: " I could tell that Hillel had no inner core of strength ; he had been robbed by his addiction of the life force that allows you to at least defend yourself.

Upon returning home, Slovak isolated himself from the rest of his bandmates, and struggled to resist the drug without the mutual support provided by his friends, Kiedis in particular.

The book was authored by Slovak's brother, James Slovak, and features writings from his brother's diaries, paintings, photos and hand written notes from Kiedis and Flea.

Using clues provided by Kiedis in previous interviews and in his autobiography Scar Tissue, writer Mark Haskell Smith concluded that the bridge that inspired the song was located in the city's MacArthur Park.
