Author Wendy Despain used Kirby's Dream Lands plot as an example of how early platform games ' plots, which she collectively described as " the main character needing to reach a villain to put right a wrong.

In 1995 Windsor-Smith created an oversized anthology series, Barry Windsor-Smith: Storyteller for Dark Horse that contained three ongoing features: " The Paradoxman ", a dark science-fiction tale, " Young GODS ", a homage to Jack Kirby's Thor and New Gods series, and " The Freebooters ", a lighthearted action series about an aging Conan-like character grown older and heavier and now running a tavern.

After Jim Steranko's tenure, which added " exciting art ," Roth returned, working with Neal Adams who blended Kirby's style with " realism, idealized beauty, and epic grandeur ," making The X-Men ( later named Uncanny X-Men ) series one of the most popular superhero comics by the late 1960s.
