Superman is given a piece of manufactured Kryptonite, but instead of weakening or killing him it drives him crazy, depressed, angry, and casually destructive, committing crimes which range from petty acts of vandalism to environmental disasters, like causing an oil spillage in order to bed a lusty woman by the name of Loreli in league with the villains.

Kryptonite is a fictional material from the Superman mythos — the ore form of a radioactive element from Superman's home planet of Krypton.

It is famous for being the ultimate natural weakness of Superman and most other Kryptonians, and the word Kryptonite has since become synonymous with an Achilles ' heel — the one weakness of an otherwise invulnerable hero.

In the Silver to Bronze Age stories as well as in the " Green, Green Glow of Home " episode of Lois & Clark New adventures of Superman Kryptonite is a stable transuranic element ( element 126 ) that finally decays to iron.

However in Superman III ( 1983 ) it is said that Kryptonite is an alloy made up of 15. 08 % plutonium, 18. 06 % tantalum, 27. 71 % xenon, 24. 02 % promethium, 10. 62 % dialium, 3. 94 % mercury, and 0. 57 % of an unknown substance.

Superman is shot by a Kryptonite bullet and the criminal places the gun in Lois's hands, hoping to frame her for the murder.

They discovered that the real Lex Luthor is at large having been the one who mailed Lois the Red Kryptonite necklace and that the one in jail was a robotic duplicate.

Krypton is usually portrayed in comics as having exploded as a result of a nuclear chain reaction caused by the planet's unstable radioactive core ( which created the Superman-deadly Kryptonite ).

* Super-Girl — In Superman # 123 ( August 1958 ), Jimmy Olsen uses a magic totem to wish a " Super-Girl " into existence as a companion and helper for Superman ; however, the two frequently get in each other's way until she is fatally injured protecting Superman from a Kryptonite meteor that a criminal has dropped towards him.

She is sent in a rocket in suspended animation to look after the infant Kal-El ; however, her rocket gets caught in the explosion of Krypton and becomes encased in a Kryptonite asteroid.

When the inhabitants of the colony are slain by Green Kryptonite, which was released by meteorites striking the lead barrier, Kara is sent to Earth by her father Zor-El to be raised by her cousin Kal-El ( Superman ).

Like all Kryptonians, Supergirl is vulnerable to Kryptonite.

During that time, the couple have a daughter, Kara, who grows to about the age of 10 or 12, when the city is put in peril when its lead shielding is punctured by meteors, releasing deadly Kryptonite radiation.

Superman then manages to figure out with help from the Justice League computer that Blue Kryptonite may reverse the aging process because Blue Kryptonite is harmful to Bizarro and therefore should be helpful to Superman.

Superman finds the Blue Kryptonite and is aged back to normal, then goes on his quest to rescue the other Super Friends and ultimately send the three villains back into the Phantom Zone.

Clark returns, and finds that the phantom's true weakness is Blue Kryptonite, which reduces Clark to human-level strength when he is exposed to it.

In the partially fictional Reeves biography Hollywood Kryptonite Reeves is murdered by order of Toni Mannix as punishment for their breakup.

When Superman is brought back from the Phantom Zone and discovers the Ultra-Humanite's cure for Gold Kryptonite, he gives some to Knightwing, which gives him powers comparable to his grandfather, but weaker as he is only a quarter-Kryptonian.

Subject 2 is killed by soldiers with a Kryptonite gun.

One of his most prominent storylines in this new continuity was the " Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite ," when he provided Lex Luthor with a sample of red kryptonite that took away Superman's powers so long as Luthor never revealed to Superman that Mxyzptlk was involved.

The most potent element incorporated into the show from the established mythology was the superhero's vulnerability to Kryptonite.

Ruin attempts to assassinate Superman with Kryptonite-based weaponry, but Mxyzptlk pushes Superman out of the way, taking a Kryptonite spear to the heart and vanishing.

Bane buries Batman alive, Star Sapphire makes Hal Jordan lose his will by having some people ( including a fake-robot version of Carol ) die in front of him, Cheetah infects Wonder Woman with a poison that makes everyone she sees be Cheetah, making her fight them all until her heart gave out, Mirror Master planted a bomb through Flash's wrist that would explode should he remove it, do nothing, or decelerate, should he chose to run ( which he did ), Metallo shoots Superman in the chest with a Kryptonite bullet, and Ma ' alefa ' ak coats the Martian Manhunter in magnesium sulfite and lights him on fire.

It is then revealed that these Kryptonians who came to Earth in Season 9, led by Major Zod, are actually clones whose blood was put in the Orb by Jor-El, who created it at the request of Krypton's ruling council so that Krypton could live on if the planet was destroyed ( although he treated the samples with Blue Kryptonite radiation so that they would be powerless if sent to a planet such as Earth ).

" At the conclusion of Season 9, Clark, faced with the threat of Zod causing a war between Earth and the Kandorians, used another Kryptonian artifact known as the " Book of Rao " to transport all the Kryptonians on Earth to another planet where they could live and rebuild Krypton in peace, Clark managing to escape relocation due to him being injured by a Blue Kryptonite blade that negated his powers until the transportation effect had passed and Lois removed the blade from his side.
