It is located approximately from Perth just outside the township of Kununurra.
" Mirima " is the name given by the Miriwoong people to the area extending some 150 kilometres to the north and south, and 170 kilometres to the east and west from Kununurra.
Access to the park by road is via Spring Creek Track, from the Great Northern Highway approximately 250 km south of Kununurra, to the track's end at the visitor centre.

Elders WA had begun and the first steps had been taken towards a branch network that would eventually extend from Kununurra to Esperance and Perth to Kalgoorlie.
Because it is kilometres by road from the nearest settlement ( Kununurra ), a complete residential camp has been constructed on site.

The landscape surrounding Kununurra includes features such as Valentine Spring, Black Rock Creek and Middle Springs along with many other waterfalls and swimming holes.
Kununurra has a Celebrity Tree Park with many trees planted by famous people including Rolf Harris, and more recently Baz Luhrmann, after the majority of the filming for his film Australia was conducted just outside of Kununurra.
The population is fairly evenly distributed, with only three towns having populations in excess of 2, 000: Broome ( 15, 000 ), Derby ( 3, 600 ) and Kununurra ( 5, 000 ).
The largest protected areas are the Prince Regent Nature Reserve and the Drysdale River National Park along with Gregory National Park and Keep River National Park across in the Northern Territory which preserve similar habitats, ( and indeed Keep River's nearest town is Kununurra in the Kimberley ).
Additionally Lake Argyle, along with Lake Kununurra, are recognised as a Ramsar protected wetlands and were listed in 1990 as Australian Site Number 32.
Lake Argyle, together with Lake Kununurra, is part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme.
The lake is recognised as an important wetland area under the Ramsar Convention ; with Lake Kununurra it forms the Lakes Argyle and Kununurra Ramsar Site.
Along with Broome and Kununurra, it is one of only three towns in the Kimberley to have a population over 2, 000.

The Ord River Diversion Dam holds back Lake Kununurra, which gravity feeds the Ord River Irrigation Area with water via the Main Channel ( M1C1 ).
