It was important to Zola that no character should appear larger than life ; but the criticism that Zola ’ s characters are cardboard, is a substantially more damaging one which in view of the characterization of Gervaise Macquart ( L ' Assommoir ), Nana Coupeau ( Nana ), Jacques Lantier ( La Bête humaine ), Serge Mouret ( La Faute de l ' Abbé Mouret ), Jean Macquart ( La Terre ) and Pascal Rougon ( Le Docteur Pascal ), may seriously be doubted.

The mine, the still in L ' Assommoir and the locomotive La Lison in La Bête humaine impress the reader with the vivid reality of human beings.

The poet is the artist in words whose writing, as in the racecourse scene in Nana or in the descriptions of the laundry in L ' Assommoir or in many passages of La Faute de l ' Abbé Mouret, Le Ventre de Paris and La Curée, vies with the colourful impressionistic techniques of Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

His more serious novels include Madelon ( 1863 ), L ' Infâme ( 1867 ), the three that form the trilogy of the Vieille Roche ( 1866 ), and Le roman d ' un brave homme ( 1880 ) – a kind of counterblast to the view of the French workman presented in Émile Zola's L ' Assommoir.

His greatest success as a dramatist attended his last attempt -- Drink -- an adaptation of Emile Zola's L ' Assommoir, produced in 1879.

Emile Zola's novel L ' Assommoir tavern " ( 1877 ) depicted the social conditions typical of alcoholism in Paris among the working classes.

The novel's central character is Étienne Lantier, previously seen in L ' Assommoir ( 1877 ), and originally to have been the central character in Zola's " murder on the trains " thriller La Bête humaine ( 1890 ) before the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Germinal persuaded him otherwise.

In 1877, in the preface of L ' Assommoir, he stated that he was going to write " about twenty novels ".

Although Zola had yet to hone his mastery of working-class speech and idioms displayed to such good effect in L ' Assommoir, the novel conveys a powerful atmosphere of life in the great market halls and of working class suffering.

L ' Assommoir begins with Gervaise and her two young sons being abandoned by Lantier, who takes off for parts unknown ; she later takes up with Coupeau, a teetotal roofing engineer, and they are married in one of the great set-pieces of Zola's fiction ; the account of the wedding party's chaotic trip to the Louvre is perhaps the novelist's most famous passage.

The title L ' Assommoir cannot be properly translated into English.

L ' Assommoir has often been translated, however, and there are several unexpurgated English versions currently in print.
