In 1986 Nespolo had the possibility of designing the stage sets for Ferruccio Busoni ’ s opera Turandot at Connecticut Grand Opera, Stamford, the first of several theatre works he made in the following years, such as the sets and costumes for Paisiello's Don Chisciotte at the Teatro dell ' Opera di Roma in 1990 and for Donizetti's L ' elisir d ' amore, a production for the Rome Opera, the Paris Opera and the Opéra de Lausanne, Liège and Metz in 1995.

His best-known works are the operas L ' elisir d ' amore ( 1832 ), Lucia di Lammermoor ( 1835 ), and Don Pasquale ( 1843 ), all in Italian, and the French operas La favorite and La fille du régiment ( both from 1840 ).

Shortly after L ' elisir d ' amore, Donizetti composed Lucia di Lammermoor, based on the Sir Walter Scott novel The Bride of Lammermoor.

It was recognized at the time as, and is still considered, Donizetti's comic masterpiece, and remains one of the most popular of his 66 operas, as well as one of the three most popular Italian comic operas, the other two being Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Donizetti's own L ' elisir d ' amore.

The libretto was translated into Italian and set by Donizetti as L ' elisir d ' amore, one of the most successful comic operas of all time.

Her operatic repertoire comprised the title roles in Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria di Rohan, Norma, La sonnambula and La vestale, as well as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Adina in L ' elisir d ' amore and Alice in Robert le diable.

While in the Metropolitan company she sang Giannetta in L ' elisir d ' amore to Enrico Caruso's Nemorino and Fyodor in Boris Godunov to Feodor Chaliapin's Boris.

Despite these issues, Gheorghiu and Alagna returned to the Metropolitan Opera for five performances of L ' elisir d ' amore in 1999 and for four performances of Faust in 2003.

L ' elisir d ' amore ( The Elixir of Love ) is an opera by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti.

Written in haste, L ' elisir d ' amore was the most often performed opera in Italy between 1838 and 1848 and has remained continually in the international opera repertory.

The premiere of L ' elisir d ' amore was at the Teatro della Canobbiana, Milan on 12 May 1832.

She is best known for her performances as Violetta in La traviata, Gilda in Rigoletto, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Mimì ( and occasionally Musetta ) in La bohème, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Adina in L ' elisir d ' amore, Liù in Turandot, Nedda in Pagliacci, all three leading soprano roles in Puccini's Il trittico, Adriana Lecouvreur, and Francesca in Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini.

Suppé was also a singer, making his debut as a basso profundo in the role of Dulcamara in Donizetti's L ' elisir d ' amore at the Sopron Theater in 1842.
