Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ( LGBT ) people and their allies have a long history of campaigning for what is generally called LGBT rights, also called gay rights and gay and lesbian rights.

There is no one organization that represents all LGBT people and their interests, although there are two organizations that are inclusive of many of the LGBT community issues: InterPride by coordinating and networking gay pride events worldwide, and International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission ( IGLHRC ), which addresses human rights violations against LGBT and HIV-positive people and works with the United Nations.

A commonly stated goal is social equality for LGBT people ; some have also focused on building LGBT communities, or worked towards liberation for the broader society from sexual oppression.

Leaders of the lesbian and gay movement of the 1970s, 80s and 90s often attempted to hide masculine lesbians, feminine gay men, transgendered people, and bisexuals from the public eye, creating internal divisions within LGBT communities.

LGBT movements have often adopted a kind of identity politics that sees gay, bisexual and / or transgender people as a fixed class of people ; a minority group or groups.

In arguing that sexual orientation and gender identity are innate and cannot be consciously changed, attempts to change gay, lesbian and bisexual people into heterosexuals (" conversion therapy ") are generally opposed by the LGBT community.

Colleges also became places of LGBT activism and support for activists and LGBT people in general, with many colleges opening LGBT Centers.

The Greens benefited from increased inroads among traditionally left-wing demographics which had benefited from Green-initiated legislation in the 1998-2002 term, such as environmentalists ( Renewable Energies Act ) and LGBT groups ( Registered Partnership Law ).

LGBT movements organized today are made up of a wide range of political activism and cultural activity, such as lobbying and street marches ; social groups, support groups and community events ; magazines, films and literature ; academic research and writing ; and even business activity.

The new social movements of the sixties, such as the Black Power and anti-Vietnam war movements in the U. The rise of feminism, LGBT social movements and the end of colonial rule and of the political exclusion of such minorities as African Americans and sexual minorities in the developed world has led to feminist, postcolonial, and multicultural thought becoming significant.

The conflict between mutants and normal humans is often compared to real-world conflicts experienced by minority groups in America such as African Americans, Jews, Communists, the LGBT community, etc.

Several anti-corporate and not-for-profit forms of alternative protest have surfaced in the punk underground, such as self-made publications known as zines, where there is greater freedom to discuss controversial ( usually far left ) political issues such as discrimination, LGBT community issues, feminism, antitheism, and veganism.

Large parades often involve floats, dancers, drag queens, and amplified music ; but even such celebratory parades usually include political and educational contingents, such as local politicians and marching groups from LGBT institutions of various kinds.

Other typical parade participants include local LGBT-friendly churches such as Metropolitan Community Churches, United Church of Christ, and Unitarian Universalist Churches, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays ( PFLAG ), and LGBT employee associations from large businesses.

The very first Eastern European Pride, called The Internationale Pride, was assumed to be a promotion of the human right to freedom of assembly in Croatia and other Eastern European states, where such rights of the LGBT population are not respected, and a support for organising the very first Prides in that communities.

Critics, such as gay shame, charge the parades with an undue emphasis on sex and fetish-related interests which they see as counter-productive to LGBT interests, and exposing the " gay community " to ridicule.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota areas surrounding Loring Park, site of the local LGBT pride festival, are regarded as a " gay " neighborhood, though many gay and lesbian people have migrated to more residential neighborhoods such as Bryn Mawr and Whittier.

LGBT publications, pride parade s, and related events, such as this stage at Bologna Pride 2008 in Italy, increasingly drop the LGBT acronym and initialism | initialism instead of regularly adding new letters, and dealing with issues of placement of those letters within the new title.

LGBT communities organize a number of events to celebrate their culture, such as Pride parades, the Gay Games and Southern Decadence.

Coming out has also been described as a process because of a recurring need or desire to come out in new situations in which LGBT people are assumed to be heterosexual or cisgender, such as at a new job or with new acquaintances.

However, not every LGBT person follows such a model.

This change in voting tendencies is most likely due to the continuous flow from large migrations of snowbirds and transplanted people from the liberal Northeast and other blue states, as well as a growing LGBT community, and also naturalized U. S. citizens born in places such as Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

It takes a liberal approach to social policies such as animal rights, LGBT rights and drug policy reform.

The gender-ambiguous term Pat and Chris has been used, particularly in LGBT dance venues, to refer to events where the gender of lead and follow isn't specified.

O ' Donnell was the first openly gay man elected to the New York State Assembly and currently serves as one of six LGBT members of the New York Legislature, alongside Assemblymembers Deborah Glick, Micah Kellner, Matthew Titone and Harry Bronson, as well as Senator Thomas Duane .< ref name =" advocate ">
