This was not due to a lack of observations ; during the 17th century, Giovanni Domenico Cassini carried out a systematic program of solar observations at the Observatoire de Paris, thanks to the astronomers Jean Picard and Philippe de La Hire.

French arms had been largely ineffective before the Anglo-Burgundian onslaught until the siege of Montargis in late 1427, when Étienne de Vignolles (" La Hire ") and John of Orleans, Count of Dunois (" the Bastard of Orleans ") managed to successfully force the siege to be lifted.

Although legend attributes the game's creation to Stephen de Vignolles, also known as La Hire, a knight in the reign of Charles VII during the Hundred Years ' War, it may possibly have come into France from Spain because the words " pique " and " repique ", the main features of the game, are of Spanish origin.

In January 1436, he led a small force including Kyriell and routed La Hire and Xaintrailles at Ry near Rouen.

Among his other well-known films were Bringing Up Baby ( 1938 ), Gone with the Wind ( 1939 ), The Maltese Falcon ( 1941 ), Sergeant York ( 1941 ), They Were Expendable ( 1945 ), Joan of Arc ( 1948 ), in which he was atypically cast as Captain La Hire, Rio Bravo ( 1959 ), and Raoul Walsh's 1930 widescreen wagon train epic The Big Trail, which also featured John Wayne's first leading role.

The Jacks in a French-styled deck have traditionally been associated with such figures as Ogier the Dane ( legendary hero of the chansons de geste ) or Holger Danske ( a knight of Charlemagne ) for the Jack of Spades ; La Hire ( French warrior ) for the Jack of Hearts ; Hector ( mythological hero of the Iliad ) for the Jack of Diamonds ; and Lancelot or Judas Maccabeus for the Jack of Clubs.

Philippe de La Hire ( or Lahire or Phillipe de La Hire ) ( March 18, 1640 – April 21, 1718 ) was a French mathematician and astronomer.

He was born in Paris, the son of Laurent de La Hire, a distinguished artist and Marguerite Coquin.

In 1683 La Hire assumed the chair of mathematics at the Collège Royale.

Two of his sons were also notable for their scientific achievements: Gabriel-Philippe de La Hire ( 1677 – 1719 ), mathematician, and Jean-Nicolas de La Hire ( 1685 – 1727 ), botanist.

The work as it stands is not the entire book that Malraux wrote at that time -- it is only the first section of a three-part novel called La Lutte avec l'Ange ; ;

Cesare Pugni wrote extensively for the harp as well — his ballet Éoline, ou La Dryade included music written for harp to accompany the ballerina's numerous variations and enhance the atmosphere of the ballet's many fantastical scenes.
