The outpost was originally established as La Misión Santa Clara de Thamien ( or Mission Santa Clara de Thamien ) at the Indian village of So-co-is-u-ka ( meaning " Laurelwood ", located on the Guadalupe River ) January 12, 1777.

It was named after Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette, a French general and politician, who came to America in 1777 in order to fight in the Revolutionary War, and who was named Major General of the Continental Army.

Among his minor productions are an opera, Pomponin on le tuteur mystifié ( 1777 ); La Satire des satires ( 1778 ); De l ' autorité de Rabelais dans la revolution présente ( 1791 ); De M. Neckar ( 1795 ); Fables nouvelles ( 1810 ); Fables inédites ( 1814 ).

During a speech delivered on 4 September 1938 at the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Pointe de Grave honoring La Fayette's's departure to America in 1777 and the arrival of the American Expeditionary Force in 1917, Bonnet stated in obliquely that France would go to war if Germany attacked Czechoslovakia and expressed the hope that the US would fight on France's side.

Besides his masterpiece, he wrote L ' Art défensif supérieur à l ' offensif ( 1793 ; in reply to attacks made upon his earliest work, La Fortification perpendiculaire, of which in later editions it forms part ); Mémoire historique sur la fonte des canons ( Paris, 1758 ), and other works on the same subject ; ( London, 1777 ); Rotation des boulets ( Acad., 1755 ); and Relations du siège de Saint-Jean-d ' Acre ( Paris, 1789 ).

Their great-granddaughter, Louise Félicité Victoire d ' Aumont, duchesse Mazarin et de La Meilleraye ( 1759 – 1826 ), married Honoré IV, Prince of Monaco in 1777.

La Longue Marche à travers la théorie de Galois Long March Through Galois Theory is an approximately 1600-page handwritten manuscript produced by Grothendieck during the years 1980 – 1981, containing many of the ideas leading to the Esquisse d ' un programme ( see below, and also a more detailed entry ), and in particular studying the Teichmüller theory.

Salieri's Italian tour of 1778 – 80 began with the production of Europa riconosciuta ( Europa Recognized ) for La Scala ( which was revived in 2004 for the same opera house's re-opening following extensive renovations ).

The first benzodiazepine, chlordiazepoxide ( Librium ), was discovered accidentally by Leo Sternbach in 1955, and made available in 1960 by Hoffmann – La Roche, which has also marketed diazepam ( Valium ) since 1963.

However, in 1778 Gluck turned down an offer to compose the inaugural opera for La Scala in Milan ; upon the suggestion of Joseph II and with the approval of Gluck, Salieri was offered the commission, which he gratefully accepted.

Among the most successful of his 37 operas staged during his lifetime were Armida ( 1771 ), La fiera di Venezia ( 1772 ), La scuola de ' gelosi ( 1778 ), Der Rauchfangkehrer ( 1781 ), Les Danaïdes ( 1784 ), which was first presented as a work of Gluck's, La grotta di Trofonio ( 1785 ), Tarare ( 1787 ) ( Tarare was reworked and revised several times as was Les Danaïdes ), Axur, re d ' Ormus ( 1788 ), La cifra ( 1789 ), Palmira, regina di Persia ( 1795 ), Il mondo alla rovescia ( 1795 ), Falstaff ( 1799 ), and Cesare in Farmacusa ( 1800 ).

The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778 and was originally known as the New Royal-Ducal Theatre at La Scala ().

The opera house re-opened on 7 December 2004 with a production, conducted by Riccardo Muti, of Salieri's Europa riconosciuta, the opera that was performed at La Scala's inauguration in 1778.

When France had become the ally of the Americans in the War of Independence, he hoisted his flag in the Channel fleet, and was present at the battle of Ushant on 27 July 1778, where his flagship, La Ville de Paris ( 90 guns ) took station just abaft the fleet-flagship, La Bretagne, and several times fought off both Keppel, Palliser and other determined English assailants.

It appeared in 1772, thanks to Barbaud de La Bruyère, who later brought out the 4th and 5th volumes ( 1775 and 1778 ).

Domenico Barbaia ( 1778 – 1841 ) began as a café waiter and made a fortune at La Scala in Milan, where he was also in charge of the gambling operation and introduced roulette.

His first published poems, some of which were inspired by English models, appeared in the Almanach des Muses ; Le Cri de mon coeur, describing his own sad childhood, in 1778 ; and La Fort de Navarre in 1780.

In 1778, Linguet, La Barre's own defender, criticized him harshly, though largely as a way of attacking the influence of the Philosophes with whom Linguet was quarreling by then:

We shall not go far wrong if we include in the list Hyacinthe Morel ( 1756 – 1829 ), of Avignon, whose collection of poems, Lou Saboulet, has been republished by Frédéric Mistral ; Louis Aubanel ( 178 ~- 1842 ), of Nîmes, the successful translator of Anacreon's Odes ; Auguste Tandon, the troubadour of Montpellier, who wrote Fables, contes et autres pièces en vers ( 1800 ); Fabre d ' Olivet, the versatile littérateur who in 1803 published Le Troubadour: Poésies occitaniques, which, in order to secure their success, he gave out as the work of some medieval poet Diou-loufet ( 1771 – 1840 ), who wrote a didactic poem, in the manner of Virgil, relating to silkworm-breeding ( Leis magnans ); Jacques Azais ( 1778 – 1856 ), author of satires, fables, & c .; d ' Astros ( 1780 – 1863 ), a writer of fables in La Fontaine's manner ; Castil-Blaze, who found time, amidst his musical pursuits, to compose Provençal poems, intended to be set to music ; the Marquis de Fare-Alais ( 1791 – 1846 ), author of some light satirical tales ( Las Castagnados ).

It was as far back as 1778 that explorer Peter Pond was the first to cross the Methye Portage between Lac La Loche and upper Clearwater River, a 19 km overland link on the route from Churchill to Athabasca.

Among his other plays may be noted: Les Deux Mères, Le Pacha de Suresnes, and La Petite Ecole des pres, all produced in 1802, in collaboration with his friend Gaugiran de Nanteuil ( 1778 – 1830 ).
