Most of the scenes were filmed in Asheville, North Carolina Highway 16 and others at Lake Lure.

For a location for the film, they did not find anything suitable in the Catskills ( as many of the resorts had been shut down at that point ), so they decided on a combination of two locations: Lake Lure, North Carolina, and the Mountain Lake Hotel near Roanoke, Virginia, with careful editing making it look like all of the shooting was done in the same area.

Dirty Dancing was filmed in Lake Lure, N. C. and Mountain Lake, Va.

Scenes in Lake Lure were filmed at the old Boys Camp, which is now a private, residential community known as Firefly Cove.

The cast stayed in the same hotel at Mountain Lake Resort in Pembroke, Virginia, and also at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa in Lake Lure, N. C. Rehearsals quickly turned into disco parties involving nearly every cast member, even non-dancers such as Jack Weston.

Today, fans can recreate their favorite Dirty Dancing moments at the annual Dirty Dancing Festival at Lake Lure, which includes a lakeside film screening, 1960s soul bands, watermelon games, dance lessons, performances and the highly-entertaining lake lift competition.

While little is left to see in Lake Lure, fans can enjoy a cruise on the Lake Lure Tours covered pontoon boat that takes them by the Firefly Cove development pointing out the scene locations and the location of " the lift.

Most of the principal filming for the movie was done in the mountains of western North Carolina including scenes: along the Rocky Broad River where it flows into Lake Lure in Rutherford County, Dillsboro, along the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad ; Waynesville, where a giant clown sign crashes through their windshield as they try to flee and where they find the baby in the stolen car is in Marshall, North Carolina ; and in Asheville, at the Biltmore Estate.
