Besides primary, secondary and vocational education, Peniche is home of a state-run polytechnic school of the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, which through its Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar de Peniche, awards academic degrees in marine technologies and tourism.

It is in Santarém District and is included in the urban agglomeration of Leiria, in central Portugal, south of Porto and north of Lisbon.

The District Capital is the city of Leiria which is also the largest city and most populous city.

This Roman settlement is most certainly the mysterious Eburobrittium, cited by Pliny the Elder as situated between Collipo ( near present-day Leiria ) and Olisipo ( Lisbon ).
