Lelio Francesco Maria Sozzini or simply Lelio ( Latin Laelius Socinus ) ( Siena, January 29, 1525 – Zürich, May 4, 1562 ), was an Italian Renaissance humanist and anti-Trinitarian reformer, and uncle of the better known Fausto Sozzini ( Latin Faustus Socinus ) from whom the Polish Brethren and early English Unitarians came to be called " Socinians ".

Lelio ( who spelled his surname Sozzini, Latinizing it Socinus ) was the sixth son of Mariano Sozzini the younger ( 1482 – 1556 ) by his wife Camilla Salvetti, and was educated as a jurist under his father's eye at Bologna.
Lelio Sozzini gained some knowledge of Hebrew and Arabic ( he gave a manuscript of the Qur ' an to Bibliander ) as well as Greek, but was never a laborious student.
Lelio Sozzini was the first of the Italian Antitrinitarians to go beyond Arian beliefs in print and deny the pre-existence of Christ in his Brevis explicatio in primum Johannis caput – a commentary on the meaning of the Logos in John Chapter 1: 1 – 15 ( 1562 ).
Lelio Sozzini considered that the " Beginning " of John 1: 1 was the same as 1 John 1: 1 and referred to the new creation not the Genesis creation.
Despite his lack of any official status in the church Sozzini had been influential in bringing the Polish church round to a Christology which closely resembled what he had learnt from his uncle Lelio Sozzini in exile in Switzerland as a young man.
