Nathan Freudenthal Leopold, Jr., ( November 19, 1904 – August 29, 1971 ) and Richard Albert Loeb ( June 11, 1905 – January 28, 1936 ), more commonly known as " Leopold and Loeb ", were two wealthy University of Chicago law students ( with undergraduate degrees from the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan, respectively ) who murdered 14-year-old Robert " Bobby " Franks in 1924 and were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Once apprehended, Leopold and Loeb retained Clarence Darrow as counsel for the defense.

Leopold and Loeb have been the inspiration for several works in film, theater, and fiction, such as the 1929 play Rope by Patrick Hamilton and Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 film of the same name.

Both Leopold and Loeb were exceptionally intelligent.

The Leopold, Loeb, and Franks families lived in the affluent Kenwood neighborhood on Chicago's Southside some six miles south of downtown.

Besides owning an impressive mansion in Kenwood, two blocks from the Leopold home, the Loeb family had a summer estate, Castle Farms, in Charlevoix, Michigan.

Leopold and Loeb met at the University of Chicago as teenagers.

Leopold was age 19 at the time of the murder, and Loeb, 18.

Before the murder, Leopold had written to Loeb: " A superman ... is, on account of certain superior qualities inherent in him, exempted from the ordinary laws which govern men.

Leopold and Loeb spent seven months planning the murder, the disposal of the body, and devising a plan to get ransom money with little or no risk of being caught.

Future Hollywood producer Armand Deutsch, the then 11-year-old grandson of Julius Rosenwald later claimed he might have been the intended victim of Loeb or Leopold.

Leopold and Loeb poured hydrochloric acid on the body to make identification more difficult.

When Leopold and Loeb learned that the body had been found, they destroyed the typewriter used to write the ransom note and burned the robe used to move the body.

Loeb told the police that Leopold was with him the night of the murder.

Leopold and Loeb claimed they had picked up two women in Leopold's car and had dropped them off near a golf course, never learning their last names.

Loeb confessed first, followed by Leopold.

The Austrian emperor Leopold II, brother of Marie Antoinette, may have wished to avoid war, but he died on 1 March 1792.

Had she lived, she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom on the death of her father, and Leopold presumably would have assumed the role later taken by his nephew, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, as Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, and never been chosen to reign as King of the Belgians.

Leopold thought that he might be seen as a deserter if he were to leave the country: " Whatever happens, I have to share the same fate as my troops.

However, letters have since shown that Napoleon III and Leopold of Belgium both warned Maximilian not to depend on European support.

The discovery of his children's talent is considered to have been a life-transforming event for Leopold.

Maynard Solomon suggests that in keeping his grandson in his home, Leopold may have hoped to train yet another musical prodigy.

Leopold was born in Vienna, the third son, and was at first educated for the priesthood, but the theological studies to which he was forced to apply himself are believed to have influenced him against the Church.
