Like Hardcore Logo, the 2005 Canadian film The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico, about a country rock singer, was also done as a fake documentary with appearances by Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie Hawkins, Merle Haggard and Levon Helm playing themselves.

The Band was a Canadian / American roots rock group that originally consisted of Rick Danko ( bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, trombone, vocals ), Levon Helm ( drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals ), Garth Hudson ( keyboard instruments, saxophones, trumpet ), Richard Manuel ( piano, drums, baritone saxophone, vocals ) and Robbie Robertson ( guitar, vocals ).

Levon Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, and after a series of treatments was able to regain use of his voice.

In his 1993 autobiography This Wheel's on Fire – Levon Helm and the Story of The Band, Helm disputes the validity of the official songwriting credits as listed on the albums, and explains that The Band's songs were often honed and recorded through collaboration between all members.

" Robertson for his part denied that Helm had written any of the songs attributed to Robertson and his daughter later remarked in a letter to the Los Angeles Times that Levon Helm's solo work consists almost entirely of songs written by others.

In 1963, Levon Helm met the groupie Cathy Smith, with whom he and other members of the Band would have a long association.

Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964, they were briefly known as the Levon Helm Sextet with sax player Jerry Penfound being the sixth member, then Levon and the Hawks after Penfound's departure.

Levon and the Hawks were recommended by blues singer John Hammond, who earlier that year had used Helm, Hudson and Robertson on his Vanguard album So Many Roads.

Levon Helm later wrote about The Last Waltz in his autobiography This Wheel's on Fire ; in the book he makes the case that The Last Waltz was primarily Robbie Robertson's project, and that he had forced The Band's break-up onto the rest of the group.

In the late 70s and 80s, Helm released several solo albums and toured with a band called Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars.

Mark Lavon “ Levon ” Helm was born on May 26, 1940, outside Elaine ( Phillips County ) to Nell and Diamond Helm.

Helm drummed on a couple of tracks for Jorma Kaukonen's February, 2009 album River of Time, recorded at the Levon Helm studio.

In March, 2010, a documentary on Helm's day-to-day life titled Ain't in It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm was released.

On June 2, 2012 at Mountain Jam, Gov't Mule, along with the Levon Helm Band ( with Lucas Nelson coming on stage for the closing song ) played a tribute set, including " The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down ," " Up On Cripple Creek ,"" It Makes No Difference ," and closing with " The Weight.

At this time the band already consisted of 21-year-old Levon Helm on drums, 17-year-old Robbie Robertson on guitar and 18-year-old Rick Danko on bass.
