Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare GCB, PC, FRS ( 16 April 1815 – 25 February 1895 ) was a British Liberal Party politician, who served in government most notably as Home Secretary ( 1868 – 1873 ) and as Lord President of the Council.

In 1873 Bruce relinquished the home secretaryship, at Gladstone's request, to become Lord President of the Council, and was raised to the peerage as Baron Aberdare, of Duffryn in the County of Glamorgan, on 23 August that year.

Lord Aberdare, who in 1885 was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, presided over several Royal Commissions at different times.

Lord Aberdare died in London on 25 February 1895, aged 79, and was succeeded in the barony by his only son from his first marriage, Henry.

The other members of the committees were: Colonel Evan Hunter, General Secretary of the British Olympic Association, and Chef de mission for Great Britain ; Lord Aberdare, the other British member of the IOC ; Sir Noel Curtis-Bennett ; Alderman H. E.

An abbreviation of this work, which as a book of travel is even more delightful than its predecessors, was published in 1894, shortly after the author's death, with a brief introductory notice by Lord Aberdare.

The comprehensive school is situated on the site of the former estate of Lord Aberdare, the main house, Dyffryn House, was still used by the school until its demolition in the 1980s.

After the House of Lords Act 1999 prevented hereditary peers from sitting in the Lords solely by virtue of their peerages, Lord Aberdare became one of the ninety-two hereditary peers elected to stay in the House of Lords.

Lord Aberdare, who would rise to the substantive rank of captain ( and would become an honorary colonel ) in World War I, served variously in the Glamorgan Yeomanry, the 2nd Life Guards, the headquarters of the 61st ( 2nd South Midland ) Division and in the Guards Machine Gun Regiment ; in 1919, immediately after the armistice, he was promoted to captain.

The scruples of the British government being overcome, a charter was at length granted ( July 1886 ), the National African Company becoming the Royal Niger Company, with Lord Aberdare as governor and Goldie as vice-governor.
