Although he was a major figure in the protectionist wing of the Conservative Party after 1844, Disraeli's relations with the other leading figures in the party, particularly Lord Derby, the overall leader, were often strained.

An alliance of pro free-trade Conservatives ( the " Peelites "), Radicals, and Whigs carried repeal, and the Conservative Party split: the Peelites moved towards the Whigs, while a " new " Conservative Party formed around the protectionists, led by Disraeli, Bentinck, and Lord Stanley ( later Lord Derby ).

This time Lord Derby ( as he had become ) took office, and to general surprise appointed Disraeli Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Lord Palmerston's government collapsed in 1858 amid public fallout over the Orsini affair and Derby took office at the head of a purely ' Conservative ' administration.

With Gladstone's refusal Derby and Disraeli looked elsewhere and settled on Disraeli's old friend Edward Bulwer-Lytton, who became Secretary of State for the Colonies ; Derby's son Lord Stanley, succeeded Ellenborough at the Board of Control.

Following the downfall of the Tory / Conservative minority government under Lord Derby in December 1852, Lord Aberdeen formed a new government from the coalition of Free Traders, Peelites and Whigs that had voted no confidence in the minority government.

At Derby in 1650 he was imprisoned for blasphemy ; a judge mocked Fox's exhortation to " tremble at the word of the Lord ", calling him and his followers " Quakers ".

Prime Ministers of the period included: Lord Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, Lord John Russell, Lord Derby, Lord Aberdeen, Lord Palmerston, Benjamin Disraeli, William Ewart Gladstone, Lord Salisbury, and Lord Rosebery.

These parties were led by many prominent statesmen including Lord Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, Lord Derby, Lord Palmerston, William Ewart Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, and Lord Salisbury.

The Conservative Leader Lord Derby became Prime Minister in 1858, but Gladstone – who like the other Peelites was still nominally a Conservative – declined a position in his government, opting not to sacrifice his free trade principles.

This committee was titled the Joint War Air Committee and its chairman was Lord Derby.

After only eight sittings, Lord Derby resigned from the Committee stating that " It appears to me quite impossible to bring the two wings closer together ... unless and until the whole system of the Air Service is changed and they are amalgamated into one service.

This plot, launched with the full knowledge of Nivelle and the French Prime Minister Aristide Briand, was announced in guarded terms at a War Cabinet meeting on 24 February, to which neither Robertson nor Lord Derby ( Secretary of State for War ) had been invited, then landed on Robertson and Haig without warning at an Anglo-French conference at Calais ( 26-7 Feb ).

* John ( 1331 – 1358 ), Lord of Elche, Biel and Bolsa, married in 1355 to Isabel Núñez de Lara and was killed by order of his cousin Pedro of Castile.

# Héloise / Helvis of Lusignan ( c. 1190 – 1216 – 1219, 1216 / 1219 or c. 1217 ), married firstly c. 1205 Eudes de Dampierre sur Salon, Lord of Chargey-le-Grey, div.

He married the heiress of Richard de Beauchamp, 1st Earl of Worcester, whose father had inherited the castle and estate of Abergavenny, and was summoned in 1392 to parliament as Lord Bergavenny.

Their daughters Cristina and María both married into the high nobility ; Cristina to Ramiro, Lord of Monzón, grandson of García Sánchez III of Navarre via an illegitimate son ; María, first ( it is said ) to a prince of Aragon ( presumably the son of Peter I ) and second to Ramón Berenguer III, count of Barcelona.

Catherine Parr, Henry's widow, soon married Thomas Seymour of Sudeley, Edward VI's uncle and the brother of the Lord Protector, Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset.

Both proved unenthusiastic, and in 1565 Mary married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who carried his own claim to the English throne.

Lord Aberdeen married Lady Catherine Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Abercorn, in 1805.

In 1828 Severn married Elizabeth Montgomerie, the natural daughter of Archibald, Lord Montgomerie ( 1773 – 1814 ) and the ward of Lady Westmoreland, one of the artist's patrons in Rome.

Lord Jellicoe married Gwendoline Cayzer in London in July 1902.

He married Marion, daughter of Thomas Boyd, 6th Lord Boyd, and left nine children:

Lord Abinger was twice married ( the second time only six months before his death ), and by his first wife ( d. 1829 ) had three sons and two daughters, the title passing to his eldest son, Robert.

Isabella's half-brother John of Ibelin, the Old Lord of Beirut governed as regent until 1210 when Maria married an experienced French knight, John of Brienne.

Lucrezia was married to Giovanni Sforza ( Lord of Pesaro ), Alfonso of Aragon ( Duke of Bisceglie ), and Alfonso I d ' Este ( Duke of Ferrara ).

A second nephew, Niccolò, was made reigning Prince of Piombino and Lord of the Isola d ' Elba in 1634, having married the heiress, 30 March 1632.

In 1922, she married Edward Hilton Young, later Lord Kennet ( she becoming Lady Kennet ), and remained a doughty defender of Scott's reputation until her death, aged 69, in 1947.

Mary rejected him, and instead married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, a descendant of Henry VII, giving Mary a stronger claim to the English throne.

On 26 March 1564 Knox stirred controversy again, when he married Margaret Stewart, the daughter of an old friend, Andrew Stewart, Lord Ochiltree, a member of the Stuart family and a distant relative of the Queen, Mary Stuart.

On 29 July 1565 when Mary married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, some of the Protestant nobles rose up in rebellion including James Stewart.

Her husband, Lord Darnley, had been murdered in apparent revenge for the assassination of Rizzio ( who was a favourite of Mary's ), upon which the Queen almost immediately married the chief suspect.

Weary of Scotland she may have been: she was now even more tired of Lord Methven, who was proving himself to be even worse than Angus in his desire both for other women and for his wife's money ; also, their only child, a daughter ( possibly called Dorothea Stewart ), died in infancy.

Charles I agreed to revive the earldom of Atholl in favour of Lord Tullibardine's children by Lady Dorothea.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Dugdale Astley, 3rd Baronet ( 19 February 1828 – 10 October 1894 ) was an English soldier and sportsman, son of the 2nd Baronet ( created 1821 ) Sir Francis Dugdale Astley and wife Emma Dorothea Lethbridge and a descendant of Lord Astley.

Lord Ashtown then married Dorothea Mary Elizabeth Minchin, former wife of Hans Heinrich XVII, 4th Prince of Pless, in 1997.

Lord Head married Lady Dorothea Louise, daughter of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 9th Earl of Shaftesbury, on 23 July 1935.

Patrick's two eldest children married their stepmother Janet Stewart's children ; daughter Jean Ruthven married Henry Stewart, 2nd Lord Methven, and the heir, William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie, married Dorothea Stewart.

Lord Glasgow married Dorothea Elizabeth Thomasina Hunter Blair, ( eldest daughter of Sir Edward Hunter Blair, 4th Baronet and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of George Wauchope ), on 23 July 1873.
