Various Governors-General had previously served as governors of an Australian state or colony: Lord Hopetoun ( Victoria 1889 – 95 ); Lord Tennyson ( South Australia 1899 – 1902 ); Lord Gowrie ( South Australia 1928 – 34 ; and New South Wales 1935 – 36 ); Major General Michael Jeffery ( Western Australia 1993 – 2000 ); Quentin Bryce ( Queensland 2003 – 08 ).

The first Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun, asked to be recalled to Britain in 1903 over a dispute about funding for the post.

In what is now known as the Hopetoun Blunder, the governor-general, Lord Hopetoun, invited Sir William Lyne, the premier of the most populous state, New South Wales, to form a government.

He is the only Australian ever appointed to this order, although three British governors-general of Australia ( Lord Hopetoun ; Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson, later Lord Novar ; and Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester ) were members.

The newly arrived Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun, instead invited Sir William Lyne, the premier of New South Wales, to form a government.

Disputes emerged between Hopetoun and several state governors — particularly South Australian governor Lord Tennyson, who would be Hopetoun's successor — over the Governor-General's right of access to dispatches and communiqués of the state governors.

An interesting friendship developed between Lord Hopetoun and the Melbourne anarchist and union pioneer, John ' Chummy ' Fleming.

The first two Governors-General, Lord Hopetoun and Lord Tennyson, had served shortened terms and had had difficult relations with Australian ministers.

In 1703 he was created Lord Hope, Viscount of Aithrie and Earl of Hopetoun in the Peerage of Scotland, with remainder to the heirs male and female of his body.

Lord Hopetoun married Lady Henrietta, only surviving daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale ( died 1721 ).

In 1792 Lord Hopetoun succeeded his great-uncle as de jure fifth Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, although he never successfully claimed this title.

Lord Hopetoun was succeeded ( in the barony of Hopetoun according to the special remainder ) by his half-brother, the fourth Earl.

Lord Haddington was the only son of Charles Hamilton, 8th Earl of Haddington and Lady Sophia, daughter of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun.

The Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun dedicated the park ' to the people of New South Wales forever '.

The Commonwealth Stone is made of sandstone, and it is almost the only remnant of the original pavilion used by Lord Hopetoun.

He acquired the nickname " Lord Southcliffe " and in 1928 became managing director of the company, by which time the Sun was on its way to becoming Australia's highest-selling newspaper.
