After hearing traditional calypso music and meeting artists such as Mighty Sparrow and Lord Invader while filming Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison in the Caribbean island of Tobago, he recorded Calypso — is like so ... in March 1957.

Lord Invader was quick to follow, and staying in New York City after a protracted legal case involving the theft of his song " Rum and Coca-Cola ", a hit by the Andrews Sisters, made his home there along with Wilmoth Houdini, and became one of the great calypsonians of the USA.

Attila the Hun, Roaring Lion and Lord Invader were first, followed by Lord Kitchener, one of the longest-lasting calypso stars in history — he continued to release hit records until his death in 2000.

1944's " Rum and Coca-Cola " by the Andrews Sisters, a cover version of a Lord Invader song, became an American hit despite the song being a very critical commentary on the explosion of prostitution, inflation and other negative influences accompanying the American military bases in Trinidad at the time.

The melody was used in the song for which Lord Invader became famous.

It was Grant's tailor who gave him his moniker by commenting, " I tell you, Rupert, you should call yourself Lord Invader so when you go up to the city you be invadin ' the capital.

The confusion probably stems from the introduction of the version by the Kingston Trio, which mentions " Lord Invader and his Twelve Penetrators ".

On 15 October 1961, Lord Invader died at a Brooklyn, New York hospital.

However, the original version of the song ( which Amsterdam did not write ) was performed by a Trinidadian calypso singer named Lord Invader, and Amsterdam was subsequently involved in a copyright suit over the song, which dragged on until 1948.

In 1944 The Andrews Sisters appropriated the song " Rum and Coca-Cola ", which had originally been recorded by Trinidadian musician Lord Invader in the 1930s.

Originally composed by Lord Invader and Lionel Belasco, it was copyrighted in the United States by entertainer Morey Amsterdam and became a huge hit in 1945 for the Andrews Sisters, spending ten weeks at the top of Billboard's U. S. Pop Singles chart.
