Lund University () is one of Europe's most prestigious universities and Scandinavia's largest institutions for education and research, consistently ranked among the world's top 100 universities.

After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the Scanian lands came under the possession of the Swedish Crown, which quickly founded the Lund University in 1666 as a means of Swedification.

The name was in some formal use until the late 19th century, when Lund University became the widespread denomination.

Lund Institute of Technology was established in 1961 but was merged with Lund University eight years later.

In recent years, Lund University has been very popular among applicants to Swedish higher education institutions, both nationally and internationally.

In 1992 Boel Flodgren, Professor of Business Law, was appointed rector magnificus ( or, strictly speaking, rectrix magnifica ) of Lund University.

The name Lundy is believed to come from the old Norse word for " puffin island " ( Lundey ), lundi being the Norse word for a puffin and ey, an island, although an alternative explanation has been suggested with Lund referring to a copse, or wooded area.

The student nations or nationer at the two ancient universities in Uppsala and Lund, of which there are now thirteen at each university, are the oldest student societies in Sweden.

In addition to Uppsala and Lund, student nations were also formed at the University of Tartu and Royal Academy of Turku ( now University of Helsinki ), the second and third oldest universities in the Swedish Empire.

The Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis, the first of its kind, was established in 1994 as collaboration between groups of three different universities, Lund, Uppsala and Stockholm, being presently active around Lund and the Ångström Laboratories in Uppsala The consortium was built with a multidisciplinary approach to focus on learning from natural photosynthesis and applying this knowledge in biomimetic systems.
