ELO's debut concert took place on 15 April 1972 at The Fox & Hounds Pub in Croydon, U. K. with a line-up of Wood, Lynne, Bevan, Bill Hunt ( horns, keyboards ), Wilfred Gibson ( violin ), Hugh McDowell ( cello ), Mike Edwards, Andy Craig ( cello ) and Richard Tandy on bass.

However, tensions soon surfaced between Wood and Lynne due to problems with management.

Despite predictions from the music press that the band would fold without Wood, who had been the driving force behind the creation of ELO, Lynne stepped up to lead the band, with Bev Bevan remaining on drums, joined by Gibson, Richard Tandy ( now on the Moog synthesiser ), Mike de Albuquerque on bass and vocals and Mike Edwards and Colin Walker on cellos.

The final line-up of 1972 was the trio of Wood, Bevan and Jeff Lynne, who transitioned the group into the Electric Light Orchestra.

Lynne joined, enthused by Wood's ELO idea, as Wood realized that he needed a second composer in the band to relieve the pressure on himself, and the band toured the UK with Arden's other major client, Black Sabbath.

From this period came their third album Looking On ( 1970 ), with four songs composed by Wood, two by Lynne and one by Bevan.

During the lengthy recording sessions for the next album, which included continuous overdubbing of new instruments by Wood and Lynne, Price left in December 1970 to pursue other projects, including the band Mongrel, although he later rejoined Wood in Wizzard and the short-lived Wizzo Band.

" California Man ", a # 7 UK hit, featured baritone saxophones, a double bass, and a riff borrowed from George Gershwin, was an affectionate tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis ( the double bass had " Killer ", Lewis ' nickname, written on it ) with Lynne and Wood trading verses and lines.

Wood released a solo album in 1973, Boulders, and went on to front the glam rock band Wizzard, while Lynne and Bevan kept touring and finally achieved success with ELO.

Wood and Lynne often spoke of working together on a project that would integrate classical instruments within a pop / rock idiom.

In January 1970, Lynne accepted a second offer by Wood to join the Move, on condition that they would eventually retire that band and concentrate on a new venture, Electric Light Orchestra.

The Move, now comprising just Wood, Lynne and drummer Bev Bevan, ceased touring in 1970 and adopted its ELO alter ego permanently in 1972.

Not long after the release of Electric Light Orchestra's first album, Wood found himself frequently at odds with co-leader Jeff Lynne.

When The Move was still on tour, he founded, together with his band colleagues Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, the Electric Light Orchestra ( ELO ), which was later to gain major commercial success.

Teen magazine, Go-Set ran a poll in August for pop performers and Gray was voted third in the ' Top Girl Singer ' category behind Lynne Randell and Bev Harrell.
