By decree of Pope Pius XII in 1949, the remains of Pius VI were moved to the Chapel of the Madonna below St. Peter's in the Papal Grotto.

In the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna is a St Justina ( once ascribed to Pordenone ); in the Staedel Museum, Frankfort, the Madonna enthroned between Sts Anthony and Sebastian ; in the Berlin Museum, a colossal Adoration of the Shepherds, and a large votive picture ( one of the master's best ) of the " Madonna and Child ," with infant angels and other figures above the clouds, and below, amid a rich landscape, two priests ; in the National Gallery, London, St Bernardin and other saints and two impressive portraits.

To the right of the " Platonica " is the chapel of Honorius III, adapted as the vestibule of the mausoleum, with interesting 13th century paintings of Peter and Paul, the Crucifixion, saints, the Massacre of the Innocents, Madonna and Child, and other subjects.

There is later work of the master in the St Christopher and Saints of 1484 in the academy, or the Newenhoven Madonna in the hospital of Bruges, or a large Crucifixion, with scenes from the Passion, of 1491 from the Lübeck Cathedral ( Dom ) of Lübeck, now in Lübeck's St. Annen Museum.

The Troubadours, Eros, romantic love, Tristan, libido vs. credo, separation from love, Satan, loving your enemy, the Crucifixion as atonement, virgin birth, the story of Isis, Osiris and Horus, the Madonna, the Big Bang, the correlation between the earth or mother Goddess and images of fertility ( the sacred feminine ).

Lorenzo's mature works ( such as the Crucifixion in the Göttingen City Museum, the Adoration of the Shepherds of the Uffizi, the Annunciation in Cambridge and the Madonna and Saints of Pistoia ) are influenced by Fra Bartolomeo, Perugino and the young Raphael.

Piero painted the outlying panels of the tympanum later ; including the Crucifixion at the top centre, St. Benedict, the Angel, the Madonna of the Annunciation, and St. Francis in the sides.

Also in Lucca, in the October 1509, he painted by Albertinelli an altarpiece with Madonna and Child with Saints for the local cathedral.

In later tradition the number of icons of Mary attributed to Luke would greatly multiply ; the Salus Populi Romani, the Theotokos of Vladimir, the Theotokos Iverskaya of Mount Athos, the Theotokos of Tikhvin, the Theotokos of Smolensk and the Black Madonna of Częstochowa are examples, and another is in the cathedral on St Thomas Mount, which is believed to be one of the seven painted by St. Luke the Evangelist and brought to India by St. Thomas.

He is said to have painted pictures of the Virgin Mary ( for example, The Black Madonna of Częstochowa or Our Lady of Vladimir ) and of Peter and Paul.

He also may have painted the Madonna and Child with John the Baptist, known as the Manchester Madonna and now in the National Gallery, London, United Kingdom.

For Meyer, he painted an altarpiece of the Madonna which included portraits of the donor, his wife, and his daughter.

Some scholars believe that Magdalena Offenburg, the model for the Darmstadt Madonna and for two portraits painted in Basel, was for a time Holbein's mistress.

The work, titled " Madonna and Child with infant Saint John the Baptist ", was painted circa 1514-1515.

For his home town of Castelfranco, Giorgione painted the Castelfranco Madonna, an altarpiece in sacra conversazione form — Madonna enthroned, with saints on either side forming an equilateral triangle.

Many specific images of the Madonna, both painted and sculptured, have achieved fame, either as objects of religious veneration or for their intrinsic artistic qualities.

* The Black Madonna of Częstochowa ( Czarna Madonna or Matka Boska Częstochowska in Polish ) icon, which was, according to legend, painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a cypress table top from the house of the Holy Family.

The Madonna and Saints ( which passed from the Duchatel collection to the Louvre ), the Virgin and Child ( painted for Sir John Donne and now at the National Gallery, London ), and the four attributed portraits in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence ( including the Portrait of Folco Portinari ), show that his work was widely appreciated in the 16th century.

The Tornabuoni Chapel frescoes, by Ghirlandaio and many assistants, were painted in four courses along the three walls, the main subjects being the lives of the Madonna and St. John the Baptist.

In Verona around 1459, he painted a grand altarpiece for the church of San Zeno Maggiore, depicting a Madonna and angels, with four saints on each side ( at right ; detail above ).

In that year, Antonello painted the so-called Salting Madonna, in which standard iconography and Flemish style are backed by a greater attention in the volumetric proportions of the figures, probably coming from his knowledge of some works by Piero della Francesca.

Standing alongside Leonardo and Michelangelo as the third great painter of the High Renaissance was the younger Raphael, who in a short life span painted a great number of lifelike and engaging portraits, including those of Pope Julius II and his successor Pope Leo X, and numerous portrayals of the Madonna and Christ Child, including the Sistine Madonna.

Set within the Gothic frame of this second storey is a relief of the Madonna of Mercy, the protectress of Arezzo, spreading her mantle out over the community's citizenry.

The frame, the broken glass and the stone that was thrown at the portrait of The Madonna, have been very well preserved, and today they can still be seen at the beautiful parish church of Gżira.

Wöllflin detects the influence of the Madonna in Michelangelo's Doni Tondo in the kneeling figure on the right, but the rest of the composition is far removed from his style, or that of Leonardo.
