In the 1980s an American firearms designer, Magnum Research, contracted IWI to re-design and manufacture a Magnum caliber (. 44 Magnum,. 357 Magnum and. 50 AE ), semi-automatic pistol.

However, a. 38 Special should not generally be used with any. 357 automatic handgun or rifle, such as the Magnum Research Desert Eagle, since such firearms require the larger recoil produced by firing a. 357 Magnum round to cycle properly.
