In 1930, while living with Dasgupta, Eliade fell in love with his host's daughter, Maitreyi Devi, later writing a barely disguised autobiographical novel Maitreyi ( also known as " La Nuit Bengali " or " Bengal Nights "), in which he claimed that he carried on a physical relationship with her.

One of Eliade's best-known works, the novel Maitreyi, dwells on Eliade's own experience, comprising camouflaged details of his relationships with Surendranath Dasgupta and Dasgupta's daughter Maitreyi Devi.

The 1988 film The Bengali Night, directed by Nicolas Klotz and based upon the French translation of Maitreyi, stars British actor Hugh Grant as Allan, the European character based on Eliade, while Supriya Pathak is Gayatri, a character based on Maitreyi Devi ( who had refused to be mentioned by name ).

The main character, Allan, is an Englishman who visits the Indian engineer Narendra Sen and courts his daughter, herself known as Maitreyi.

Allan himself stands alongside Eliade's male characters, whose focus is on action, sensation and experience — his chaste contacts with Maitreyi are encouraged by Sen, who hopes for a marriage which is nonetheless abhorred by his would-be European son-in-law.

Of the two, Maitreyi was a Brahmavadini ( one who is interested in the knowledge of Brahman ). The descendant sects of Brahmans are the progeny of the first wife Katyaayanee.

Upon discovering this, Narendra Sen becomes enraged, rejecting their guest and keeping Maitreyi in confinement.

However, the story also casts doubt on her earlier actions, reflecting rumors that Maitreyi was not a virgin at the time she and Allan first met, which also seems to expose her father as a hypocrite.

When she heard this, Maitreyi asked Yājñavalkya to teach her what he considered as the best.

The story is adopted from Maitreyi Devi's Bengali novel Na Hanyate, and is based on a love triangle.

The best known are the novels Maitreyi (" La Nuit Bengali " or " Bengal Nights "), Noaptea de Sânziene (" The Forbidden Forest "), Isabel şi apele diavolului (" Isabel and the Devil's Waters ") and the Novel of the Nearsighted Adolescent, the novellas Domnişoara Christina (" Miss Christina ") and Tinereţe fără tinereţe (" Youth Without Youth "), and the short stories Secretul doctorului Honigberger (" The Secret of Dr. Honigberger ") and La Ţigănci (" With the Gypsy Girls ").

One was Maitreyi and the other Katyaayanee.

Satyaboti was played by Maitreyi Mitra.

The most infamous dacoit was probably India's Phoolan Devi who authored an autobiography.

According to Shri Sankara Menon ( 1907 – 2007 ), who was her associate from Kalakshetra ’ s beginnings, Rukmini Devi raised Bharatanatyam to a puritan art form, divorced from its recently controversial past by " removing objectionable elements " ( mostly, the Sringara, certain emotional elements evocative of the erotic, such as hip, neck, lip and chest movements ) from the Pandanallur style, which was publicly criticized by Balasaraswati and other representatives of the traditional devadasi culture.

Sri Chaitanya was the second son of Jagannath Mishra and his wife Sachi Devi who lived in the town of Nabadwip in Nadia, West Bengal.

Another stalwart in the genre of thumri was Naina Devi, who was married to a royal family but later devoted her life to the singing of the song of Tawaifs.

The protagonists in his comics are typically insane characters who live in dysfunctional societies, and whose manias are able to speak through other objects ( as with Johnny and the Doughboys, or Devi and Sickness ).

Coomaraswamy then met and married an Englishwoman who performed Indian song under the stage name Ratan Devi.

Among his students prominent in popularizing yoga in the West were K. Pattabhi Jois, famous for popularizing the vigorous Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga style, B. K. S. Kamadhenu is regarded as a form of Devi ( the Hindu Divine Mother ) and is closely related to the fertile Mother Earth ( Prithvi ), who is often described as a cow in Sanskrit.

His father was Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, a well-respected advocate in Bengal, who became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, and his mother was Lady Jogmaya Devi Mookerjee.

The vision ends with Max hugging Devi, who turns out to be an illusion.

As an example to prove her point she tells a story about one man she was dating who defecated himself at the diner table ( as seen in Issue 2 of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac ), we then cut to another flashback once again an unspecified time ago, Devi is at a night club thinking about the music that is playing, when a man dressed as a vampire named Eric strikes up conversation.

Sickness informs Devi that she isn't the first person who caught on to them this early in the process, yet it always ends the same with them taking over nonetheless, allegedly one of the fighters was someone who introduced the forces to Devi.

Devi then remembers she is very late for a meeting with someone who hired her as a freelancer painter for a children's book, and speeds away in an attempt to make it there on time.

The protagonist, Devi, is an introverted female who is currently under attack by the same forces that wrought havoc on Johnny, the protagonist of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and her love interest ( the interest ended when he tried to kill her in an attempt to " immortalize the moment ").

* The 1968 Bollywood film Sangharsh, based on a story by Jnanpith Award winner, Mahasweta Devi, presented a fictionalised account of vendetta within a Thuggee cult in the holy Indian town of Varanasi.

The Hill of Devi is his non-fictional account of this period.

In 1928, the famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova visited Bombay and the Arundale couple went to her performance, and later happened to travel on the same ship as her, to Australia where she was to perform next ; over the course of the journey their friendship grew, and soon Rukmini Devi started learning dance from one of Anna's leading solo dancers, Cleo Nordi.

It was later at the behest of Anna that Rukmini Devi turned her attention to discovering traditional Indian dance forms, which had fallen to disrepute and dedicated the rest of her life into their revival.

Mundkur Durga is Kuladevi for the Brahmin community of Bhargava Gothra and most of the devotees from GSB, Bunts, Billavaas, Kulaals, Devadigaas and other devotees worship as Mane Devi ( Goddess of their original House ) and the priests are belonging to Bharadwaja Gothra from the ancient time in Mundkur, Yelinje, Ulepady and Inna.

Jainpete, ruins of Jain Basadi and palace, Kalkuda and Jattinga Daivaas ( Worshiped by the then Jains ) can be seen here and Jain community is not living, which is said to be due to the curse of Devi to the bad attitude of earlier Jains and their cruel Ruler Veeravarma who turned the idol from west to east.
