* July 27 – Siward, Earl of Northumbria invades Scotland to support Malcolm Canmore against Macbeth, who usurped the Scottish throne from Malcolm's father, King Duncan.

Jane Kaczmarek is Malcolm's overbearing, authoritarian mother, Lois, and Bryan Cranston plays his disengaged but loving father Hal.

One of Malcolm's quoted memories of his father is of his visits to the market in Surrey Street, where he would set up his platform and spout forth his views on the need for socialism: " Now ladies and gentlemen.

His son Indulf would become king on Malcolm's death.

Malcolm's grandfather died at Carlisle on 24 May 1153, and Malcolm was inaugurated as king on 27 May 1153 at Scone at age twelve.

Having made peace with Henry, replaced Fergus of Galloway with his sons, and resettled Moray, only one of Malcolm's foes remained, Somerled, by 1160 king of the Isles as well as of Argyll.

Both the English king and St-Calais did all in their power to support Malcolm's sons, who had been educated in England, in their attempts to secure the Scottish throne.

The opening lines do refer to the king who is specifically located in Dunfermline where historically there was a royal residence, Malcolm's Tower.

In 1057 various chroniclers report the death of Macbeth at Malcolm's hand, on 15 August 1057 at Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire.

Examples include the door of the church where Cole seeks sanctuary ; the color of the balloon, carpet, and Cole's sweater at the birthday party ; the tent in which he first encounters Kyra ; the volume numbers on Crowe's tape recorder ; the doorknob on the locked basement door where Malcolm's office is located ; The shirt that Anna wears at the restaurant ; Kyra's mother's dress at the wake ; and the shawl wrapped around the sleeping Anna when Malcolm realizes he is a ghost.

Fordun's account goes on to relate how Margaret died of grief within days, and how Malcolm's brother Donald Bane laid siege to the castle.

If this was Malcolm's intent, his death and that of Edward on campaign in Northumbria in November 1093 ( see Battle of Alnwick ( 1093 )) confounded his plans.
