By 1971, Malmö reached 265, 000 inhabitants, but this was the peak which would stand for more than 30 years.

On the 27th of April, 2011 the population of Malmö reached the 300, 000 mark.

Malmö Redhawks finished fifth in HockeyAllsvenskan in the 2009 – 10 season and thus reached the playoffs, which was an improvement over last season.

In 1949 the club reached Allsvenskan for the first time after defeating Halmstads BK in the decisive game of the season ; during this time Swedish leagues were played autumn – spring, on 31 July they played their first game in Allsvenskan against Degerfors IF and lost 2-0, afterward, the later world famous Gunnar Nordahl claimed that he had seen much worse newcomers, also this year, on 4 September Kalmar faced Malmö FF in front of 15 093 people in the audience ; this is still the audience record on Fredriksskans.

IFK Malmö also reached the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup in the 1960 – 61 season, the second best achievement in the competition after arch rivals Malmö FF who reached the final in 1979.

In 2007, Malmö Redhawks participated in a qualification series ( Kvalserien ) consisting of the top four teams of HockeyAllsvenskan and the bottom two teams from Elitserien, having finished 12th in the 2007 – 08 Elitserien season.

He has won about 30 tournaments in his professional career, including tournaments at Wijk aan Zee ( 1992 ) and first places in Biel ( 1993 ), Dos Hermanas ( 1994 ), Belgrade ( 1995 ), Tilburg ( 1996 ), Malmö ( 1999 ), and Pamplona ( 2004 ).

In that same year, Olimpia won the Copa Interamericana by defeating Deportivo FAS of El Salvador by an aggregate of 8 – 3 ( first leg result: 3 – 3, second leg result: 5 – 0 ) and the Intercontinental Cup by defeating the UEFA Champions League runner-up Malmö FF of Sweden by an aggregate win of 3 – 1.

Halmstads BK was 36 minutes from winning their fifth Allsvenskan title after leading Allsvenskan most of the season, but only managed 1 – 1 against IFK Göteborg in the last game, while Malmö FF, on the same point prior to the last match, managed to win with 1-0 against IF Elfsborg, Markus Rosenberg, on loan from Malmö FF, became league top goalscorer with 14 goals.

Historically the clubs main rivals are Malmö FF although this rivalry has been toned down since the clubs have not played in the same division for almost 50 years.

In the third week of August each year a festival, Malmöfestivalen, fills the streets of Malmö with different kinds of cuisines and events.

BUFF, the International Children and Young People's Film Festival in Malmö, takes place every year in March.

In 1992 Malmö was the host of the Eurovision Song Contest 1992, after Sweden won it the previous year, 1991 in Rome, Italy.

The next year, on 24 August 1524, Gustav arrived in Malmö in order to reach a settlement with Denmark and its king Frederick.

Svenskt travderby ( the Derby, open for the best four year old horses ), hosted in September at Jägersro in Malmö.

This year he captained Malmö FF who won their first Swedish league ( Allsvenskan ) title in 18 years.

The following year expectations were still high, but due to a mediocre start ( only nine points in the first 9 rounds ), IF Elfsborgs 2010 campaign increasingly became an uphill struggle trying, but in the end failing to catch up to Helsingborgs IF and Malmö FF.

Halmstads BK won the Bernhard Aronssons vandringspris after defeating IS Halmia in 1922 ; the club also won a series of tournaments in Jönköping, Malmö and Ängelholm, however the district championship was lost to Varberg this year.

Hodgson's greatest continental achievement at Malmö came the following year in the 1989 – 90 European Cup.

The following year he played for Malmö Redhawks, also in Sweden, but left the team during the season for Kärpät, in Finland.

The tunnel runs from under Malmö Central Station to Triangeln continuing to Hyllievång ( Hyllie Meadow ), where it emerges to connect with the Øresund Bridge, effectively changing Malmö Central from being a terminus to being a transit station.

The motorway system has been incorporated with the Øresund Bridge ; the European route E20 goes over the bridge and then, together with the European route E6 follows the Swedish west coast from Malmö – Helsingborg to Gothenburg.

The Øresund Bridge ( which includes a 3 km tunnel ) between Danish capital Copenhagen and the largest city of Scania, Malmö was inaugurated on 1 July 2000 by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Since the summer 2000, the cities of Copenhagen and Malmö have been connected by a toll bridge / tunnel ( Øresund Bridge ) for both rail and road traffic.

The Øresund or Öresund Region (; ) is a transnational region in northern Europe, centred on the cities of Copenhagen and Malmö.

At most of the end stations other types of trains are at hand for travel to the most remote suburbs of greater Copenhagen-or for travel across the Øresund to Scania and its main city Malmö.

In Sweden, E 20 is a motorway from the Øresund Bridge in Malmö to Nääs 30 km east of Gothenburg, a long motorway.
